Chapter 1 - The Man Who Walked Into His Own Trap

“Sit down.”
Jason’s voice was quiet.
That was what made it frightening.
There was no shouting in the enormous living room. No dramatic movement. No one rushed toward Lucas. The only sound was the faint hum of the air-conditioning and the ticking of the bronze clock mounted above the fireplace.
Lucas remained standing.
His hand was still halfway toward the door.
Thirty minutes earlier, he had entered Jason’s mansion believing he was coming to collect Stephanie’s ex.
Now Stephanie’s ex was standing across the room.
So were the cleaner.
The waitress.
The two men connected to the case.
Paulie.
Jaden.
Benita.
And Jason.
Lucas slowly turned around.
“What is this?”
Jason rested both hands on the arms of his wheelchair.
“You heard me.”
Lucas stared at him.
“Jason, I asked you a question.”
“And I gave you an instruction.”
Lucas’s jaw tightened.
For years, Lucas had been accustomed to controlling rooms. He knew when to smile, when to become angry, when to sound offended, and when to pretend he knew nothing.
But Jason knew his brother.
He recognized every small movement.
The twitch near Lucas’s mouth.
The way his eyes kept moving toward the door.
The way his shoulders had stiffened when the waitress pointed at him.
Lucas was afraid.
He simply didn’t want anyone to know it.
“Sit,” Jason repeated.
Lucas finally walked toward an armchair.
His two men were kept several feet away, watched carefully by Jason’s security team.
Lucas lowered himself into the chair.
Then he smiled.
It was forced.
“All right,” he said. “I’m sitting. Now somebody explain this ridiculous situation.”
Jason looked toward the waitress.
She swallowed.
Paulie gave her a reassuring nod.
She stepped forward.
“My name is Anita.”
Lucas looked at her as if he had never seen her before.
She noticed.
And something changed in her face.
“You remember me.”
Lucas gave a small laugh.
“I’m sorry. Should I?”
“You came to the restaurant.”
Lucas’s smile disappeared.
“With him.”
She pointed toward Stephanie’s ex, Emmanuel.
Emmanuel stood near the far side of the room, his expression exhausted.
Lucas looked at him.
Then at Anita.
“I’ve been to hundreds of restaurants.”
Anita shook her head.
“You weren’t there to eat.”
Jason watched Lucas carefully.
Anita continued.
“You sat at the table in the corner. You thought nobody could hear you because the restaurant was almost empty.”
Lucas leaned back.
“This is nonsense.”
“You gave him an envelope.”
Lucas’s eyes flickered.
Only once.
But Jason saw it.
So did Jaden.
Anita took another step forward.
“I remember because you argued.”
Lucas turned toward Jason.
“You brought me here because some waitress thinks she remembers seeing me somewhere?”
Jason didn’t answer.
Instead, he looked toward the cleaner.
Her name was Miriam.
She had worked around people connected to Stephanie before everything fell apart.
Miriam’s hands trembled slightly.
Lucas noticed.
He smiled.
“You too?”
Miriam stared at him.
“I saw you that night.”
Lucas’s expression hardened.
“What night?”
“The night Stephanie disappeared.”
Benita inhaled sharply.
Jason remained completely still.
Lucas looked at Miriam for several seconds.
Then he laughed.
“This is incredible.”
Nobody joined him.
Lucas stopped laughing.
Miriam continued.
“I was cleaning the back corridor when I heard Stephanie arguing with someone.”
Lucas’s face remained blank.
“She was crying,” Miriam said.
Jason’s fingers tightened around the wheelchair armrest.
Stephanie.
Even hearing her name still hurt.
For months, Jason had believed a carefully constructed version of events. He had believed Emmanuel was responsible. Lucas had reinforced that belief repeatedly, always appearing helpful, always promising justice.
And Jason had trusted him.
That was the part that burned deepest.
Miriam looked directly at Lucas.
“I heard Stephanie say, ‘Lucas, you promised me this would stop.’”
The room went silent.
Lucas’s face changed.
Barely.
But it changed.
“That’s a lie.”
Miriam shook her head.
“No.”
“You expect my brother to believe you?”
“I don’t expect anything,” Miriam said. “I’m telling him what I heard.”
Lucas turned toward Jason.
“You’re seriously listening to this?”
Jason’s voice remained calm.
“I’m listening to everyone.”
“Then listen to me.”
“I have been.”
Lucas leaned forward.
“Jason, Emmanuel was Stephanie’s ex. Everyone knows they had problems. You spent months looking for him because you believed he was responsible. Your own men found him hiding in Benin.”
Emmanuel finally spoke.
“I wasn’t hiding from Jason.”
Lucas turned sharply.
Emmanuel’s eyes stayed on him.
“I was hiding from you.”
Something passed across Lucas’s face.
This time everyone saw it.
Lucas stood.
Jason spoke immediately.
“Sit down.”
“I’m not sitting here while this man lies about me.”
Jaden rose from his chair.
He didn’t threaten Lucas.
He simply stood.
That was enough.
Lucas looked at Jaden, then slowly sat again.
Emmanuel stepped forward.
“You told me Stephanie had evidence.”
Lucas said nothing.
“You said she was going to destroy everything.”
“Everything what?” Jason asked.
Emmanuel looked at Jason.
“The company.”
Jason’s expression changed.
“What company?”
“Your company.”
Lucas suddenly laughed.
“Now we’ve reached the fantasy part.”
Emmanuel ignored him.
“Stephanie discovered money moving through companies that didn’t make sense.”
Jason looked at Lucas.
Lucas stared back.
Emmanuel continued.
“She didn’t understand it at first. She thought it was an accounting mistake. Then she realized somebody had been using businesses connected to Jason’s empire.”
Jason’s voice dropped.
“For what?”
Emmanuel hesitated.
Lucas suddenly spoke.
“Careful.”
Everyone looked at him.
Lucas realized his mistake immediately.
Jason tilted his head.
“Why should he be careful?”
Lucas’s face tightened.
“I’m warning him about making accusations he can’t prove.”
Emmanuel reached into his jacket.
Jason’s security immediately moved.
Emmanuel stopped.
“Easy. It’s just paper.”
Paulie checked him first.
Then Emmanuel removed a folded document.
He placed it on the coffee table.
Jason stared at it.
“What is that?”
“A copy of something Stephanie gave me.”
Lucas went pale.
For the first time since entering the house, there was no hiding it.
Jason looked from the document to Lucas.
Then back again.
Paulie picked it up and handed it to Jason.
Jason unfolded it.
At first, he didn’t understand what he was looking at.
Then he saw the names.
Companies.
Accounts.
Transfers.
Dates.
One company appeared repeatedly.
A company Jason recognized.
He had approved its creation years earlier for a legitimate investment project.
But the project had been closed.
The company should have been dormant.
Yet according to the paper in his hands, millions had continued moving through it.
Jason looked up.
“Lucas.”
Lucas didn’t answer.
Jason held up the paper.
“Explain this.”
“I’ve never seen it.”
Emmanuel laughed bitterly.
“You told me the same thing when Stephanie showed it to you.”
Jason turned toward him.
“She showed Lucas?”
“Yes.”
“When?”
“Three days before she disappeared.”
Jason felt something cold settle in his chest.
He remembered those three days.
Lucas had been around constantly.
Supporting him.
Advising him.
Telling him Stephanie seemed frightened because Emmanuel had returned.
Lucas had built the entire story piece by piece.
Jason looked at his brother.
“You knew.”
Lucas shook his head.
“No.”
“You knew Stephanie had discovered this.”
“No.”
“You knew she was investigating.”
“Jason—”
“And then she disappeared.”
Lucas stood again.
“This is insane.”
This time Jason didn’t tell him to sit.
Lucas pointed toward Emmanuel.
“This man has spent months running away, and suddenly he walks into your house with a piece of paper and you believe everything?”
Jason studied him.
“I haven’t said what I believe.”
Lucas paused.
Jason continued.
“But I know what I heard on the phone.”
Lucas frowned.
“What?”
“You were relieved when I said Emmanuel hadn’t spoken.”
Lucas’s mouth opened.
Nothing came out.
Jason leaned forward.
“You asked whether his mouth was still covered.”
“That doesn’t mean anything.”
“You asked who was in my house.”
“Because I was coming here!”
“You asked how many men were here.”
Lucas’s breathing changed.
Jason continued.
“And when I told you Emmanuel couldn’t talk, you said, ‘Good.’”
Silence.
Benita looked at Lucas differently now.
Not with uncertainty.
With realization.
Lucas rubbed his forehead.
“You’re twisting a normal conversation.”
“No,” Jason said. “I was testing you.”
Lucas froze.
Jason let those words remain between them.
Then Paulie walked toward the television mounted on the wall.
He connected his tablet.
The screen came alive.
A security recording appeared.
Lucas stared at it.
“What is that?”
Paulie pressed play.
The image showed a restaurant parking area.
The timestamp was several months old.
A vehicle arrived.
A man stepped out.
The image wasn’t perfect.
But it was clear enough.
Lucas.
He walked toward another man.
Emmanuel.
The waitress covered her mouth.
“That’s the night.”
Lucas didn’t move.
The footage continued.
Lucas handed Emmanuel something.
An envelope.
Then they argued.
Jason stared at the screen.
Lucas slowly looked toward Emmanuel.
“You kept this?”
Emmanuel answered quietly.
“No.”
Paulie smiled faintly.
“The restaurant did.”
Lucas looked toward the exit again.
Jason noticed.
“Still thinking about leaving?”
Lucas turned.
“You can’t keep me here.”
“No,” Jason said.
“I don’t intend to.”
Lucas seemed confused.
Jason glanced toward Paulie.
Paulie nodded.
“Because when you leave,” Jason continued, “you won’t be leaving with your men.”
Lucas stared at him.
Jason picked up the document again.
“You came here believing Emmanuel would disappear before he could tell me anything.”
“That is not true.”
“But now he’s going to tell me everything.”
Emmanuel looked at Lucas.
For the first time, Lucas appeared genuinely afraid.
Jason turned toward Emmanuel.
“Start from the beginning.”
Emmanuel nodded slowly.
“It started six months before Stephanie disappeared.”
Lucas suddenly shouted.
“Don’t!”
Everyone froze.
Lucas realized what he had done.
Jason’s eyes narrowed.
Emmanuel gave a bitter smile.
“You see?”
Lucas’s face hardened.
Emmanuel turned toward Jason.
“Stephanie discovered someone had been stealing from you.”
Jason looked at Lucas.
“How much?”
Emmanuel hesitated.
Then answered.
“At least forty-eight million dollars.”
Benita gasped.
Jaden stared at Lucas.
Jason said nothing for several seconds.
Forty-eight million.
But Emmanuel wasn’t finished.
“And that,” he said quietly, “was only what Stephanie could prove.”
Jason looked down at the document.
A strange calm came over him.
He had spent months believing Stephanie’s story was about jealousy, betrayal and revenge.
Now he understood.
It had never been about love.
It had been about money.
And someone inside his own family had been protecting a secret worth millions.
Jason raised his eyes.
“How much was actually taken?”
Emmanuel looked directly at him.
“I don’t know.”
Then he said the words that changed everything.
“But Stephanie did.”
Jason’s heart pounded.
“Where is the rest of her evidence?”
Emmanuel glanced toward Lucas.
Lucas’s face had gone completely white.
Then Emmanuel answered.
“She hid it somewhere Lucas could never reach.”
Jason leaned forward.
“Where?”
Emmanuel took a slow breath.
“Inside Jason Omaly’s own empire.”
And Lucas suddenly lunged for the phone on the table.
