Chapter 13 - The Billionaire Gave Away the One Thing Everyone Wanted

Three weeks before the wedding, Jason called an emergency board meeting.

Rumors spread immediately.

Was he selling?

Retiring?

Removing Lucas permanently from the family companies?

By nine o’clock, every director was seated.

Jason entered with Rachel.

Stephanie joined remotely.

Jason placed a folder on the table.

“I’m restructuring the Omaly empire.”

The room erupted.

Jason waited.

When everyone quieted, he continued.

“No single person will control it again.”

A director frowned.

“You’re the majority owner.”

“Currently.”

Silence.

Jason explained.

A substantial portion of his voting control would move into a professionally governed trust with independent oversight.

Another portion would fund the foundation.

Jason would remain an important shareholder.

But the empire would no longer depend on one man.

One director stared.

“You’re voluntarily giving up absolute control?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Jason smiled.

“Because I finally learned absolute control is a liability.”

The news shocked financial media.

Some commentators called him foolish.

Others called it visionary.

Jason didn’t care.

Victor had wanted the empire because he believed owning it meant owning Jason.

Jason had finally made that impossible.

No person could take his identity by taking his company.

When Lucas heard the announcement, he came to the mansion.

“You really did it.”

“Yes.”

“Dad would have thought you were crazy.”

Jason smiled.

“Probably.”

Lucas sat.

“Are you scared?”

“A little.”

Lucas nodded.

“Good.”

Jason laughed.

“Why?”

“Means you’re not pretending anymore.”

Jason looked at his brother.

That might have been the greatest change of all.

They no longer performed strength for each other.

Wedding day arrived quietly.

Jason and Stephanie deliberately avoided a massive celebrity-style event.

Family.

Friends.

People who had stood beside them.

That was enough.

Jason waited beneath an archway in the mansion garden.

His wheelchair had been decorated subtly with a small floral arrangement Stephanie insisted on.

Jason had complained.

Then secretly loved it.

Music began.

Stephanie appeared.

Evelyn walked beside her.

Jason’s eyes filled immediately.

Lucas stood nearby.

Not as best man.

That role belonged to Jaden.

Lucas had understood.

Trust rebuilt slowly.

But he was there.

And that mattered.

Stephanie reached Jason.

“You’re crying.”

“No.”

“You definitely are.”

“Wind.”

“There is no wind.”

Jason laughed.

They exchanged vows.

Stephanie spoke first.

“I once thought protecting someone meant keeping danger away from them.”

She looked into Jason’s eyes.

“I learned that sometimes protecting someone means trusting them with the truth.”

Jason took her hands.

“When everything collapsed, I thought I had lost control.”

He smiled.

“But what I actually lost was the illusion that I could control everything.”

People laughed softly.

Jason continued.

“I cannot promise nothing will ever frighten us.”

Stephanie’s eyes filled.

“But I promise you will never have to be frightened alone.”

They exchanged rings.

When they kissed, the garden erupted in applause.

Evelyn cried openly.

Benita hugged her.

Lucas looked toward the sky.

Later, during dinner, Lucas approached the microphone.

Jason immediately groaned.

“No.”

Everyone laughed.

Lucas smiled.

“I’ll be brief.”

“That would be a first,” Jason said.

More laughter.

Lucas looked at Jason.

“There was a time when my brother’s success made me feel small.”

Jason’s smile faded.

Lucas continued.

“I never told him.”

He looked around.

“And because I didn’t tell him, I started trying to prove I could make money without him.”

Jason finally understood the beginning.

Not greed.

Comparison.

Lucas continued.

“That insecurity led me into the worst decisions of my life.”

He looked at Stephanie.

“I hurt people I loved.”

Then Jason.

“But my brother taught me something.”

Lucas paused.

“Being given another chance doesn’t mean being given your old life back.”

Jason felt his chest tighten.

“It means being given an opportunity to build a better one.”

Lucas raised his glass.

“To Jason and Stephanie.”

Everyone joined.

“To an honest life.”

Jason raised his own glass.

That night, after everyone left, Jason and Stephanie remained in the garden.

“Happy?” she asked.

Jason thought.

“Yes.”

“Rich?”

He smiled.

“Apparently.”

She laughed.

“No. I mean really rich.”

Jason looked through the windows.

Evelyn was helping Benita gather flowers.

Jaden was arguing with Paulie over leftover cake.

Lucas was washing dishes despite Evelyn telling him not to.

Jason looked back at his wife.

“Yes.”

He understood her question now.

“I’m richer than I’ve ever been.”

Stephanie kissed his forehead.

The empire had survived.

But it no longer mattered in the way it once had.

One chapter remained.

And Jason wanted it to belong not to Victor, not to betrayal, and not to money.

He wanted the last chapter to belong to what came afterward.

May you like

Life.
