Chapter 10 - The Secret Their Father Left Behind

Evelyn stared at the broken coffee cup.
Jason waited.
He had learned that silence was sometimes more powerful than questions.
Eventually Evelyn sat.
Lucas was still meeting investigators, so only Jason, Stephanie, Benita, Jaden and Paulie were present.
Jason placed the photograph on the table.
“Tell me.”
Evelyn wiped her eyes.
“Your father knew Victor’s father.”
Jason frowned.
“Victor’s father?”
“Richard Dane.”
The name meant nothing to Jason.
Evelyn continued.
“Your father and Richard started a small investment company together.”
Jason stared.
“How have I never heard this?”
“Because it ended badly.”
“How badly?”
Evelyn looked at the photograph.
“Your father discovered Richard was stealing.”
History repeating itself.
Jason felt a chill.
“What happened?”
“Your father removed him from the company.”
“And?”
“Richard threatened him.”
Stephanie sat closer.
Evelyn continued.
“Months later, your parents died.”
Jason’s chest tightened.
Their deaths had always been described as an accident.
“Are you saying Richard caused it?”
“No.”
Evelyn shook her head.
“I never had proof.”
“But you suspected him.”
“Yes.”
“Why didn’t you tell us?”
“You were children.”
Jason stared at her.
“We stopped being children twenty years ago.”
“I know.”
Evelyn began crying.
“I was afraid.”
Jason looked away.
Again.
Fear.
Every secret in his family seemed to grow from it.
Stephanie touched his shoulder.
Evelyn continued.
“Your father left documents.”
“Where?”
“I kept them.”
Jason looked at her.
“You still have them?”
“Yes.”
She led them to a locked cabinet in her home.
Inside were old ledgers and correspondence.
Jason spent hours reading.
His father had discovered Richard Dane diverting money.
After Richard was removed, he had threatened to take everything from the Omaly family one day.
Jason finally understood Victor.
This wasn’t merely business.
Victor had inherited revenge.
His obsession with Jason’s empire wasn’t random.
He believed the Omaly family had stolen the future his father deserved.
Stephanie found a letter.
“Jason.”
He read it.
Richard had written:
One day your children will build something. Mine will take it.
Jason sat back.
Decades.
This feud had waited decades.
Benita whispered, “Victor grew up believing your family was the enemy.”
Jason nodded.
“But he still chose what he became.”
That distinction mattered.
Pain explained behavior.
It did not excuse it.
Rachel reviewed the documents later.
“They strengthen motive but don’t prove anything about your parents’ accident.”
Jason nodded.
He didn’t want revenge.
He wanted truth.
Investigators reopened questions surrounding the old incident based on records discovered in Victor’s files.
Weeks passed.
Victor remained under strict legal restrictions as the financial case expanded.
Lucas cooperated fully.
The Omaly companies stabilized.
Jason sold several compromised subsidiaries and created independent oversight.
No family member would ever again have unchecked access to company money.
Including Jason.
When the board questioned that decision, Jason answered simply:
“If rules only apply to people we distrust, they aren’t rules.”
The quote spread online after the meeting.
People began sharing Jason’s story.
Not because he was a billionaire.
Because families everywhere recognized the deeper problem.
Secrets.
Favoritism.
Fear.
The damage caused when people protected appearances instead of truth.
Then investigators called.
They had found something connected to Jason’s father.
Not proof of murder.
But proof Richard Dane had attempted to sabotage his business shortly before the accident.
Victor had inherited the documents.
Jason met Victor one final time through legal channels.
Victor looked older.
“You found my father’s letters.”
“Yes.”
“So now you understand.”
Jason shook his head.
“No.”
Victor frowned.
“I understand why you hated us.”
Jason leaned forward in his wheelchair.
“But I don’t understand why you chose to become the thing you claimed my father was.”
Victor said nothing.
Jason continued.
“Your father told you we stole your future.”
“He did.”
“And you believed him.”
“Yes.”
“My father left records too.”
Victor looked up.
“They show Richard stole first.”
Victor’s expression changed.
“No.”
Jason placed copies on the table.
Victor read them.
His hands began trembling.
“No.”
Jason watched.
Victor had built his identity around a story.
Now the story was collapsing.
“My father wouldn’t—”
“He did.”
Victor stared at the papers.
Jason almost felt sorry for him.
Almost.
“You destroyed lives to avenge a lie.”
Victor looked shattered.
Jason turned his wheelchair.
Victor called after him.
“Jason.”
Jason stopped.
“What?”
“What am I supposed to do with this?”
Jason looked back.
“The same thing the rest of us have to do.”
“What?”
“Live with the truth.”
Jason left.
Outside, Stephanie waited.
She smiled.
“Ready?”
“For what?”
“To go home.”
Jason looked toward the sky.
For years, he thought home was the mansion.
Now he understood.
Home was where truth didn’t need to knock before entering.
But one person was still missing.
Lucas.
May you like
And the decision about whether Lucas could ever return to the family would become Jason’s hardest choice yet.
