Chapter 4 - The Man Behind the Gate

The envelope had never been opened.
Caroline knew because Lily had always sealed important letters with a strip of clear tape across the flap.
That strip remained intact.
“Where did you get this?” Caroline asked.
Noah glanced toward Ethan.
He still didn’t know who Ethan was.
“Mom gave it to me.”
“When?”
“The last night I saw her.”
Caroline’s hands shook.
“How long ago?”
Noah looked down.
“Almost a year.”
The room went silent.
Lily had been alive a year ago.
Ruiz leaned forward.
“Tell us what happened that night.”
Noah swallowed.
“Victor came home angry.”
He remembered shouting.
A broken glass.
His mother pushing the backpack into his arms.
She put the photograph inside.
Then the letter.
Then she kissed Noah and told him to hide in the laundry room.
He heard Victor yelling.
Then something fell.
Later Lily opened the door.
Her lip was bleeding.
“She told me we were going away.”
“Did you?”
Noah shook his head.
“Victor came back.”
That was the last time Noah saw his mother.
The next morning Victor told him Lily had abandoned him.
Noah never believed it.
For months he stayed because he had nowhere else to go.
Then Victor began asking about the letter.
Noah pretended he knew nothing.
Three days ago, Victor found the photograph.
Noah grabbed his backpack and ran.
“Why did you come to this school?” Caroline asked.
Noah pointed at the photograph.
“There’s writing underneath your name.”
Caroline looked again.
A faded line she had overlooked contained the name of the school where Caroline had once taught.
Noah had been trying to find her.
He had actually succeeded.
Caroline opened Lily’s letter.
The first line destroyed whatever remained of her old life.
Dear Caroline, if Noah gives you this, please believe him before you believe anyone else.
Lily explained that Victor had controlled their movements for years.
He threatened Ethan.
He convinced Lily that the only way to keep Ethan alive was to disappear.
Later, when she attempted to escape, Victor used Noah as leverage.
But Lily had discovered something else.
Victor’s obsession was not merely personal.
There was money involved.
A trust established by Noah’s grandfather.
A trust Noah could inherit only if his biological identity remained concealed until a particular legal condition was met.
Caroline read faster.
At the bottom was an address.
47 Willow Street.
Ruiz looked at it.
“You recognize that?”
“No.”
Ethan did.
His face had gone white.
“That was our father’s first house.”
Caroline stared at him.
Their father had died five years earlier.
Before his death, he had repeatedly tried to speak with Ethan about “something Lily left behind.”
Ethan had refused.
He had been too hurt.
Too angry.
Now they understood.
Their father knew.
Perhaps not everything.
But enough.
Officer Ruiz stood.
“We’re going to Willow Street.”
Noah suddenly grabbed Caroline’s hand.
“Don’t.”
“Why?”
His voice dropped.
“Because Victor knows about the house.”
Ruiz stopped.
“How?”
“I heard him talking.”
“To whom?”
Noah looked toward the station windows.
“A man from the school.”
Caroline’s stomach tightened.
“Who?”
Noah whispered the answer.
“Mr. Keller.”
The janitor.
The same man who had appeared behind the iron gate.
The same man who claimed he didn’t know Noah.
And the man who had called the police moments after Caroline recognized the pendant.
Officer Ruiz reached for his phone.
Before he could dial, another officer entered quickly.
“Ruiz?”
“What?”
“We just checked Keller.”
“And?”
The officer looked at Caroline.
“He isn’t a school janitor.”
Ruiz stood.
“What do you mean?”
“The real Martin Keller is sixty-two and home recovering from surgery.”
Caroline felt Noah’s fingers tighten around hers.
The officer continued.
“The man at the gate used a stolen ID.”
“Where is he now?”
“No one knows.”
Ruiz looked toward the parking lot.
The space where the maintenance van had been parked was empty.
Noah whispered, “He found me.”
Caroline pulled him close for the first time.
And Noah did not resist.
Because they all understood what had happened.
Noah hadn’t accidentally encountered a stranger at the school.
May you like
Someone had followed him there.
And now that man knew Noah had found Caroline.
