Chapter 11 - The Letter That Was Never Delivered

Police searched the neighborhood.

Victor was gone.

But his appearance sent a message.

He was not finished.

Lily was moved to a protected location.

Noah remained under temporary protection while the court established Ethan’s parental rights.

Caroline expected Noah to feel relieved.

Instead, he became quieter.

One night she found him awake.

“What’s wrong?”

“If Victor goes to jail, does everything become normal?”

Caroline sat beside him.

“Not immediately.”

“What if normal never comes?”

“Then we build something different.”

Noah looked at her.

“Better?”

“That’s the plan.”

He reached into his backpack and removed one last letter.

He had forgotten it existed.

It was addressed to Ethan.

Lily had written it years earlier.

Ethan opened it.

Inside, Lily described Noah’s first steps.

His first word.

His fear of thunderstorms.

His habit of falling asleep holding the pendant.

All the moments Ethan had missed.

At the bottom Lily had written:

I tell him about you even though I tell him you're gone. I know that sounds cruel. But I need him to know he came from love, not fear.

Ethan pressed the letter to his chest.

Noah watched.

“What was my first word?”

Ethan looked at Lily.

She smiled through tears.

“Light.”

Noah frowned.

“That's weird.”

Emily grinned.

“It could've been broccoli.”

Everyone laughed.

It was the first uncomplicated laughter the family had shared.

Then Ruiz called.

Victor had contacted Bell from an unregistered number.

Police traced part of the call.

Victor was still nearby.

And he had made one statement.

“He says he wants what belongs to him.”

Lily’s face changed.

“Noah.”

Ruiz nodded.

But Lily shook her head.

“No. Not Noah.”

Everyone stared.

May you like

Lily looked at Caroline.

“The pendant.”
