Chapter 15 - The Night Noah Vanished

The night before Noah’s first official school day, Caroline woke at 3:17 a.m.
Something felt wrong.
She checked Emily.
Sleeping.
Then Noah’s room.
Empty.
The window was closed.
His backpack was gone.
Panic tore through the house.
Ethan called police.
Lily searched the yard.
Caroline found a note.
I need to do one thing by myself. I’ll come back.
Ruiz traced traffic cameras.
No kidnapping.
No Victor.
No accomplice.
Noah had simply walked away.
Emily woke and immediately knew where he had gone.
“The gate.”
They drove to the school.
Noah sat in the same place where Emily first found him.
Back against the iron bars.
Backpack in his lap.
Caroline approached slowly.
“Why?”
Noah looked at the pavement.
“I wanted to know if it still felt scary.”
“Does it?”
“A little.”
Emily sat beside him.
“You could’ve waited until morning.”
“I know.”
“You scared everybody.”
“I know.”
Ethan crouched.
“You never have to disappear to prove you're brave.”
Noah looked at him.
“I wasn't trying to be brave.”
“What were you trying to be?”
Noah thought.
“Finished.”
Lily began crying.
She understood.
The gate was where Noah’s old life ended.
He needed to return before the new one could begin.
Caroline sat on his other side.
For a while, the three simply watched dawn brighten the schoolyard.
Then Noah removed the silver pendant.
He looked at Lily.
“Can I stop wearing it?”
She smiled.
“Yes.”
He placed it in her palm.
For years it had been protection, evidence and memory.
Now it could simply be a necklace.
Noah stood.
He picked up his backpack.
And together they walked home.
But someone had been watching from a parked car.
Not Victor.
Not Pike.
A reporter.
