Chapter 12 - The Woman Everyone Mocked Walked Into the Family MeetingThe blood did not belong to Leo.

It belonged to Father Michael.

They found the priest conscious behind the old storage cabinets.

Kora dropped beside him.

“Don’t move.”

“Kora?”

“I’m here.”

“They were looking for something.”

“Who?”

“Two men.”

“Did they find it?”

Father Michael managed a weak smile.

“No.”

Mateo looked toward the open locker.

“It’s empty.”

The priest shook his head.

“Victor knew lockers could be opened.”

He pointed toward the altar.

Kora remembered her mother’s letter.

The truth is where Kora first learned not to be afraid.

Not the locker.

The charity clinic.

The altar where Elena had taught her ten-year-old daughter how to wrap a stranger’s injured hand.

Mateo helped move a scorched panel.

Behind it was a narrow cavity.

Inside sat a metal case.

Victor’s ring opened it.

The contents could destroy an empire.

Ledgers.

Photographs.

Signed payment records.

Hospital contracts.

Names of officials.

And a handwritten statement from Victor.

Kora read the final page.

Victor had known Dominico planned to kill him.

He had left proof with Elena.

But one paragraph changed everything.

If I die, Mateo must never inherit our old methods. He must build something lawful or walk away completely.

Mateo read it twice.

Then a third time.

Kora watched his face.

His entire life had been shaped by a dead man’s expectations.

Now Victor was speaking again.

Not from memory.

From ink.

Build something lawful.

Or walk away.

The next morning, Mateo called a meeting.

Every senior member of the Rivas family attended.

Kora entered beside him.

The reaction was immediate.

Some recognized her.

Some whispered.

The bride.

The bakery girl.

The woman from the fire.

One older man stood.

“She shouldn’t be here.”

Mateo remained seated.

“Kora Bell saved my life.”

“That doesn’t make her family.”

Kora answered before Mateo could.

“I’m not asking to be.”

The room quieted.

She placed Victor’s ledger on the table.

“I’m here because your family and mine were lied to by the same man for twenty-five years.”

She told them about Elena.

Victor.

Dominico.

The hospital.

The chapel.

Leo.

Nobody interrupted.

When she finished, Mateo stood.

“My uncle wanted this organization legal.”

Several men objected immediately.

Mateo raised one hand.

“I’m finishing what he started.”

The room erupted.

Kora watched alliances fracture in real time.

Some supported Mateo.

Others were furious.

One man called him weak.

Another accused Kora of manipulating him.

Mateo didn’t respond.

Kora did.

“You think I carried him out of a burning building so I could tell him what to do?”

The man laughed.

Kora stepped closer.

“I carried him because he was dying.”

Her voice remained quiet.

“If I wanted power, I picked a terrible week to find it.”

Several people laughed despite themselves.

Tension broke.

Just enough.

Then the doors opened.

Gino entered.

His expression told Mateo something was wrong.

He whispered in Mateo’s ear.

Mateo looked toward Kora.

“What?”

She asked.

Mateo hesitated.

May you like

Then answered.

“Leo took your father.”
