Chapter 15 - The Night Kora Returned to the Burned ChapelSaint Jude’s stood black against the night.

Half its roof was gone.

The altar was charred.

Yellow police tape fluttered in the wind.

Kora had not expected to return again.

But Leo sent a message.

COME BACK TO WHERE YOU SHOULD HAVE DIED.

Mateo wanted investigators everywhere.

Kora agreed.

This time, she wasn’t proving anything.

She had learned the difference between courage and recklessness.

Hidden teams surrounded the chapel.

Gino monitored exits.

Kora entered wearing a wire.

Mateo listened from a command vehicle.

Leo stood near the ruined altar.

Angelo stood beside him.

Kora felt Mateo’s reaction through the silence in her earpiece.

Leo smiled.

“Full circle.”

Kora looked at Angelo.

“You killed Victor.”

The older man didn’t deny it.

“He was destroying everything.”

“He was trying to save Mateo from becoming you.”

Angelo’s face hardened.

“You know nothing about family.”

Kora almost laughed.

“My mother died for mine.”

Leo stepped forward.

“You have the ledger?”

“No.”

“You came without it?”

“I came for the truth.”

“Truth doesn’t buy anything.”

“It bought you a federal investigation.”

Leo’s expression shifted.

Good.

He hadn’t known.

Kora continued.

“Your demolition company. Hospital records. My mother’s video. Nico’s testimony.”

Leo looked toward Angelo.

For the first time, fear entered the room.

Angelo said quietly, “You said you handled this.”

Leo snapped, “Shut up.”

Kora heard Mateo breathing through the earpiece.

Then Angelo made the mistake investigators needed.

He spoke clearly.

“I killed Victor. You burned the chapel. We both did what was necessary.”

Kora closed her eyes for half a second.

Confession.

Recorded.

Leo realized too late.

He stared at Kora’s dress.

Not a wedding dress this time.

A simple black coat.

But he noticed the wire beneath the collar.

His face changed.

“Kora.”

She stepped back.

Leo moved.

Investigators entered from three doors.

Chaos erupted.

No dramatic gunfight.

No heroic last stand.

Just frightened men discovering that power vanished quickly when witnesses, recordings and evidence arrived at the same time.

Angelo surrendered.

Leo ran.

He escaped through the damaged sacristy.

Mateo left the command vehicle despite every instruction from his doctor.

Gino shouted after him.

Mateo entered the chapel.

“Kora!”

“I’m fine.”

He reached her.

She touched his chest.

“You were supposed to stay outside.”

“I’m bad with instructions.”

“You obey mine.”

“Selective.”

She almost smiled.

Then the chapel bell rang.

Once.

Impossible.

The bell system had been disconnected.

Kora and Mateo looked up.

A shadow moved along the upper gallery.

Leo.

He had not escaped.

May you like

He had gone higher.

And in his hand was one final weapon.
