Chapter 14 - The Betrayal Came From Inside Mateo’s Own HouseThe address belonged to a warehouse at the northern docks.

Mateo recognized it.

“My uncle owned this.”

Gino frowned.

“I thought it was sold.”

“It was.”

“To who?”

Mateo checked the records.

The answer made him silent.

Rafael Costa.

Mateo’s security coordinator.

The man seen outside Saint Jude.

The traitor inside Mateo’s organization.

They went to the warehouse with investigators.

It was empty.

Almost.

Inside one office, they found dozens of photographs.

Mateo.

Gino.

Kora.

Thomas.

Victor.

Elena.

Someone had mapped both families for years.

At the center of the wall was one photograph larger than the others.

Mateo and Kora outside Mercer Street Clinic.

Taken the morning after the fire.

Below it:

UNEXPECTED VARIABLE.

Kora stared.

“That’s me?”

Mateo looked at her.

“Yes.”

“Nice to finally be promoted from bad investment.”

He didn’t laugh.

She touched his arm.

“I’m okay.”

“No, you’re not.”

“Neither are you.”

“Also true.”

Gino searched a desk.

He found a phone.

One unsent message remained.

Mateo doesn’t know the real reason Victor died.

Mateo went still.

There was an attached audio file.

They played it.

Rafael’s voice.

Dominico didn’t kill Victor.

Silence.

Someone inside Rivas did.

Mateo stopped breathing.

The recording continued.

Victor planned to dissolve the organization’s illegal operations. Three senior members refused. They arranged his death and let Dominico take the blame.

Mateo looked physically ill.

The names followed.

Two were dead.

The third was alive.

A man who had attended the family meeting the previous day.

Angelo Rivas.

Mateo’s godfather.

The man who had raised him after Victor died.

Kora whispered, “Mateo.”

He walked away.

She followed him outside.

Rain had started.

Mateo stood beneath the warehouse awning.

“Everything I built.”

Kora waited.

“He taught me loyalty.”

His voice broke slightly.

“Angelo taught me what family meant.”

Kora said, “Maybe he taught you what he needed you to believe.”

Mateo looked at her.

“That doesn’t erase what you built yourself.”

He shook his head.

“You don’t understand.”

“I understand more than you think.”

“My mother died because someone lied to me. My career disappeared because someone lied to me. I nearly married a man because everyone underestimated what lies could do.”

She stepped closer.

“You don’t choose what people did before you knew the truth.”

Mateo looked at her.

“You choose what you do after.”

For several seconds neither moved.

Then Mateo touched her face.

Slowly.

Giving her every chance to step away.

She didn’t.

Their first kiss was not dramatic.

No music.

No cheering.

Just rain.

Exhaustion.

And two people who had met in the worst moment of their lives realizing they had stopped feeling alone.

When they separated, Gino appeared at the door.

“I hate to ruin whatever this is.”

“You already did,” Mateo said.

“But Angelo is gone.”

Mateo turned.

“What?”

“His house is empty.”

Gino held up a phone.

“And Leo just called him fourteen minutes ago.”

The betrayal was not finished.

It had only changed generations.
