Chapter 5 - My Mother’s Last Recording

They escaped through the diner kitchen seconds before Damian entered.
Henry disappeared with one of Luca’s men.
Elena and Luca crossed a drainage field in darkness before reaching another vehicle.
Only when they were moving did Elena open her hand.
The memory card remained there.
Tiny.
Almost ridiculous.
Something so small had frightened Damian enough to bring three cars.
“What if it’s damaged?” she asked.
“We’ll recover what we can.”
“What if there’s nothing?”
“There’s something.”
“How do you know?”
“Damian came personally.”
Back at the penthouse, Luca’s technician copied the card onto an isolated computer.
Three folders appeared.
BELLWEATHER.
FRANKLIN.
IF I DIE.
Elena stared.
“Open the last one.”
A video appeared.
Her mother sat in the same office Elena remembered from childhood.
Evelyn Ashford looked tired.
But alive.
“My name is Evelyn Ashford.”
Elena gripped the chair.
“If this recording is being watched, I may no longer be able to protect my daughter.”
Elena began crying before her mother even continued.
Evelyn described Bellweather.
The money.
The bribes.
The threats.
Then she named Franklin.
“My husband believes he is protecting our family.”
Elena shook her head.
“He is protecting himself.”
Evelyn looked directly into the camera.
“Franklin has agreed to help Damian Vale obtain control of our charitable assets.”
Luca leaned closer.
Then Evelyn said:
“Damian ordered Matteo Moretti killed.”
Luca became completely still.
Elena looked at him.
He did not move.
Evelyn continued.
“But Damian did not act alone.”
A pause.
“Franklin gave him Matteo’s location.”
Luca closed his eyes.
There it was.
The truth he had waited years to hear.
Elena reached for his hand.
For once, Luca did not pull away.
The recording continued.
“I have contacted federal investigators. I intend to testify.”
Elena whispered, “Mom.”
“If something happens to me before I can—”
The video abruptly ended.
A second file began automatically.
This recording was different.
Dark.
Shaking.
Her mother was inside a vehicle.
Breathing hard.
“If Elena ever sees this…”
She looked behind her.
“I think Franklin knows.”
Elena’s stomach tightened.
“I’m going to meet Luca Moretti. He doesn’t know yet. If I don’t arrive…”
A noise.
Evelyn looked toward the windshield.
Then the video ended.
Elena stared at the black screen.
Luca whispered, “She was coming to me the night she crashed.”
Neither spoke.
Then the computer technician said, “There’s another file.”
It was corrupted.
He recovered twelve seconds.
Evelyn’s face appeared.
Blood near her temple.
She was lying somewhere.
Not the crash site.
A room.
A man’s voice could be heard.
Franklin.
“Where’s the card, Evelyn?”
Elena covered her mouth.
Her mother whispered, “You’ll never touch her.”
Franklin replied:
“She’s my daughter.”
Evelyn smiled weakly.
“No, Franklin.”
The recording distorted.
Then came the final sentence.
“You were never Elena’s father.”
The screen went black.
Elena stared at it.
Nobody moved.
Luca slowly turned toward her.
“What did she say?”
Elena already knew.
She had heard perfectly.
But her mind refused to accept it.
Franklin Ashford—
the man who had controlled her entire life—
was not her biological father.
May you like
And somewhere inside the remaining files was probably the name of the man who was.
