Chapter 13 - The Night Someone Came for the Child

Two weeks before the wedding, someone entered Creek House at night.
Aayoka heard the door.
She woke instantly.
Elias was at North Ridge with Micah.
A young widow named Clara slept in the next room.
Aayoka took a lantern.
“Who's there?”
A figure moved.
She raised the light.
Sheriff Bell stood inside.
Older.
Thinner.
Released after serving part of his sentence.
Aayoka did not lower the lantern.
“You should leave.”
“I will.”
“Then why are you here?”
“To apologize.”
“You could have done that in daylight.”
“I wasn't sure I had the courage.”
Aayoka almost laughed at the irony.
Bell looked around.
“I heard what you made this place.”
“Yes.”
“I helped make this town unsafe for people.”
“Yes.”
He accepted every answer.
“I can't undo it.”
“No.”
“But Crowe hid money.”
Aayoka stiffened.
“What?”
Bell handed her a map.
“He had emergency cash buried near the southern property. Money from stolen cattle.”
“Why tell me?”
“Because it belongs to the families he robbed.”
Aayoka studied him.
“You could take it.”
“I've taken enough.”
Then Bell left.
The recovered money eventually funded Creek House.
Bell never asked for forgiveness.
That mattered to Aayoka.
Real remorse did not demand comfort from the injured person.
When Elias heard about the visit, he was furious.
“He entered at night?”
“He was afraid.”
“So?”
“You once left before sunrise because you were afraid.”
Elias stopped.
“That's unfair.”
“Yes.”
“Accurate, though.”
“Yes.”
He sighed.
“You're impossible.”
“You keep saying that.”
The stolen money was recovered.
Creek House expanded.

And Silver Creek learned that even the consequences of old wrongdoing could sometimes be redirected toward something good.
