Chapter 17 - The Cowboy Who Finally Stayed

Marriage did not transform Elias into a perfect man.

Three months later, he and Aayoka had their first serious argument.

It concerned cattle.

Then money.

Then somehow a broken chair.

By the end, neither remembered the beginning.

Aayoka walked outside.

The old Elias felt panic.

Leave first.

Protect yourself.

He saddled Bramble.

Then stopped.

The horse looked at him.

“Don't.”

Bramble snorted.

Elias laughed.

He removed the saddle.

Aayoka returned an hour later.

She saw him sitting on the porch.

“You stayed.”

“I said I would.”

Her anger softened.

“I was wrong about the cattle.”

Elias blinked.

“Can you repeat that?”

“No.”

He smiled.

“I was wrong about the money.”

“And the chair?”

“Your fault.”

“Elias.”

“My fault.”

She sat beside him.

That small evening mattered as much as their wedding.

Anyone could promise to stay beside a creek surrounded by friends.

Staying during ordinary disappointment was harder.

Years later, Aayoka would remember that night whenever someone asked why she trusted him again.

Not because he never failed.

Because eventually, when every old instinct told him to run, Elias Ward learned how to remain seated on the porch.
