Chapter 11 - The Day Emily Disappeared Again

A year after the incident, my heart stopped for the second time.
I arrived at school for pickup.
Emily wasn’t at the usual gate.
I waited.
Children streamed past.
No Emily.
I called her teacher.
“She left with the group.”
My hands went cold.
Not again.
I checked the playground.
Nothing.
The office called her name over the speaker.
Nothing.
Every memory returned.
The empty sidewalk.
The gas station.
The phone call.
Then someone touched my arm.
“Mom?”
I turned.
Emily stood behind me.
“What happened?”
I grabbed her.
She laughed in surprise.
“Mom!”
“Where were you?”
“The library.”
“You were supposed to meet me.”
“I know. Mrs. Carter asked me to help.”
I pulled back.
“You have to tell me.”
Her smile faded.
“I’m sorry.”
I realized I was shaking.
Emily saw it.
Then she hugged me.
“I’m safe.”
Those words brought me back.
She was safe.
This was not that day.
That evening, I apologized for frightening her with my reaction.
She apologized for forgetting to tell me.
Then she asked, “Do you still think about Grandma’s house?”
“Yes.”
“Me too.”
“Does it scare you?”
“Sometimes.”
“Me too.”
She smiled.
“Adults get scared?”
“All the time.”
She considered that.
“But you still do stuff.”
“That’s what courage is.”
She nodded thoughtfully.
Then she said, “I think I was courageous at the gas station.”
“You were.”
“No.”
She corrected herself.
May you like
“I know I was.”
That difference nearly made me cry.
