Chapter 16 - The Woman at the Gas Station

Years later, Emily asked if we could visit the gas station.
The employee who helped her was no longer there.
But another worker remembered hearing the story.
Emily stood near the counter.
“This is where I called you.”
“I know.”
“It seemed bigger.”
“You were smaller.”
She smiled.
We bought two bottles of water.
Then Emily asked the cashier whether they had a way to recognize employees who helped customers.
They did.
She wrote a note thanking the man who had helped her years earlier, hoping management could somehow pass it along.
On the way home, she said, “He probably thought it was just one phone call.”
“Probably.”
“But it wasn’t.”
