Chapter 5 - Sophia’s Warning

Sunday arrived with perfect blue skies.
I hated that.
Some part of me thought betrayal deserved thunderstorms.
Instead, Chicago gave us sunshine.
Lukas hummed while getting dressed.
I watched him knot his tie in the mirror.
“You look beautiful,” he said.
“So do you.”
He laughed.
“Nervous?”
The question caught me.
“About dinner?”
He shrugged.
“Mom can be intense.”
“She always is.”
He turned.
“Whatever happens tonight, remember that I love you.”
There are sentences that sound romantic until you know they are warnings.
I smiled.
“I love you too.”
It was the last time I ever lied to my husband about that.
At Ingrid's house, everything looked familiar.
Flowers.
Candles.
Wine.
Family photographs.
The same dining room where my marriage had ended without anyone realizing it.
Elisa hugged me.
Ingrid kissed my cheek.
“You look lovely.”
“Thank you.”
Her smile seemed warmer than usual.
Now I knew why.
They needed something.
Dinner passed slowly.
Nobody mentioned Sophia.
Nobody spoke German except for harmless phrases.
They were being careful.
That told me Lukas knew or suspected I had learned something.
After dessert, Ingrid disappeared into the study.
She returned holding a folder.
My heartbeat changed.
“There is something we'd like to discuss.”
Lukas reached for my hand.
I let him take it.
His father stared at his plate.
Elisa looked uncomfortable.
Interesting.
Ingrid sat opposite me.
“Evelyn, you know how much we love you.”
I smiled politely.
“Yes.”
“And how much we know you've wanted a family.”
There it was.
I felt Lukas squeeze my hand.
He spoke softly.
“There's something I need to tell you.”
I looked at him.
He performed pain beautifully.
“I made a mistake.”
Nobody moved.
“With Sophia.”
I let silence stretch.
“What kind of mistake?”
His eyes filled with rehearsed regret.
“She's pregnant.”
I pulled my hand away.
Not dramatically.
Just enough.
Lukas lowered his head.
“I'm sorry.”
I stared at him.
Ten years of marriage.
And he thought this was the moment I learned the truth.
I allowed tears into my eyes.
Those weren't fake.
Nothing about the pain was fake.
“How long?”
“Once.”
Lie.
“When?”
“Five months ago.”
Partial truth.
“Do you love her?”
“No.”
Perhaps true.
Perhaps irrelevant.
I looked at Ingrid.
She leaned forward.
“Evelyn, sometimes terrible circumstances create unexpected blessings.”
There it was.
The sales pitch.
I almost admired the audacity.
“What blessing?”
“The baby.”
I stared at her.
“You think my husband's affair is a blessing?”
“No.”
She softened her voice.
“But the child is innocent.”
“I agree.”
“And Sophia isn't prepared to provide the kind of home a child deserves.”
I thought of Sophia hiding because Lukas had frightened her.
“Is that what she says?”
Ingrid hesitated.
“What?”
“Has Sophia said she doesn't want her baby?”
Lukas interrupted.
“Evie—”
“No.”
I looked at him.
“You brought this to me. Let me understand.”
He became quiet.
Ingrid recovered.
“Sophia has considered an arrangement.”
She pushed the folder toward me.
There it was.
I opened it.
Pretended to read slowly.
My copy was already with Rachel.
“This says we would raise the baby.”
“Yes,” Lukas said.
“We?”
“You and me.”
I looked at him.
“You cheated on me, got another woman pregnant, and you want me to raise the child with you?”
His face crumpled.
“I know how it sounds.”
I almost laughed.
No.
He didn't.
Then Ingrid delivered the line they had prepared.
“You've wanted to be a mother for so long.”
Silence.
Something inside me became very still.
There are insults that arrive disguised as sympathy.
This was one.
I looked at her.
“Yes.”
She smiled gently.
“Then perhaps something beautiful can come from something painful.”
I closed the folder.
“And what do you need from me?”
Lukas glanced at his mother.
Tiny movement.
There.
That was the question they had been waiting for.
“Nothing tonight,” he said.
Lie.
Ingrid tapped the folder.
“Just a few preliminary signatures.”
I looked down.
“Tonight?”
“Only to acknowledge that you've reviewed the proposal.”
Rachel had warned me.
Do not sign anything.
I picked up the pen.
Lukas exhaled.
Ingrid smiled.
I placed the tip against the paper.
Then stopped.
“I have one question.”
“Anything,” Lukas said.
I looked directly at Ingrid.
Then, for the first time in ten years, I spoke to my mother-in-law in fluent German.
“Will signing this also make it easier for you to steal the rest of my money?”
The room went dead.
Absolutely dead.
Ingrid's face emptied.
Elisa dropped her fork.
Lukas stared at me.
His father whispered, “What?”
I continued in German.
“I'm sorry. Was my pronunciation unclear?”
Nobody answered.
I looked at Lukas.
“Would you prefer English?”
His face had turned white.
“You speak German?”
“Very well, actually.”
“How long?”
“Long enough.”
Ingrid's hand tightened around her wineglass.
I smiled at her.
“Would anyone like coffee?”
Elisa made a strangled sound.
She remembered.
They all did.
The previous Sunday.
The cake.
The conversation.
Their laughter.
Lukas whispered my name.
“Evelyn.”
I turned toward him.
“You said Sophia was five months pregnant.”
He swallowed.
“You said I didn't suspect anything.”
His eyes widened.
“And your mother said you'd make me raise the baby.”
Ingrid stood.
“You misunderstood.”
I laughed.
It was the first genuine laugh I'd had all week.
“No, Ingrid.”
I stood too.
“For the first time in this family, I understood everything.”
Then I removed several papers from my handbag.
Bank statements.
The secret account.
The May 14 payment.
The trust reference.
Lukas stared at them.
His face changed.
Not guilt.
Fear.
That was when I knew I had found the real wound.
“Where did you get those?”
I looked at him.
“Interesting question.”
“Evelyn, listen—”
“No.”
I pushed the unsigned agreement back across the table.
“You've had ten years to talk.”
I picked up my bag.
“Now you can listen.”
Then the front doorbell rang.
Nobody moved.
It rang again.
Ingrid looked at Lukas.
Lukas looked terrified.
I smiled.
“I think that's for you.”
The door opened.
Sophia stepped inside.
But she wasn't alone.
Beside her stood a brunette woman I recognized from an old courthouse photograph.
May you like
Claire Donovan.
Lukas's first wife.
