Chapter 18 - The Family I Never Expected

Maya called me Aunt Evie.

The first time, I cried.

Sophia panicked.

“Did that upset you?”

“No.”

I wiped my eyes.

“It's perfect.”

Maya was three.

She had no idea how strange our history was.

Someday, perhaps, she would know parts of it.

For now, she knew that I brought books.

That I made pancakes badly.

That I let her choose music in my car.

Sophia and I had become friends slowly.

Real friends.

Not because betrayal magically disappeared.

Because both of us changed after it.

She never asked me to pretend her affair with Lukas hadn't hurt me.

I never demanded she spend the rest of her life apologizing.

Noah and Sophia never married.

They became excellent co-parents.

Eventually, Sophia met someone else.

A teacher named Ben.

Kind.

Funny.

Terrible at German.

At their small backyard wedding, I stood near the back holding Maya's hand.

During the reception, Sophia approached me.

“You know what is strange?”

“Everything?”

She laughed.

“Fair.”

Then her expression softened.

“If Lukas hadn't lied—”

“Don't.”

She stopped.

I smiled.

“We don't need to thank bad things for good things that happened later.”

Her eyes filled.

“You're right.”

“We made the good part.”

She hugged me.

This time, I hugged her back.

That evening, Maya dragged me onto the dance floor.

I danced badly.

Everyone laughed.

And surrounded by people I never could have predicted becoming part of my life, I understood that family wasn't always the group sitting around the table where you were expected to endure whatever they decided.

Sometimes family was built afterward.

Carefully.

May you like

Honestly.

By choice.
