Chapter 14 - Lukas Makes His Choice

Two years after our divorce, I saw Lukas unexpectedly.
O'Hare Airport.
Thousands of people.
One man I once believed would be beside me forever.
He noticed me near a departure board.
We both stopped.
He looked different.
Thinner.
Older.
Less polished.
“Evelyn.”
“Hi, Lukas.”
No shaking.
No anger.
That surprised me.
“How are you?”
“Good.”
“You look good.”
“Thank you.”
He glanced at my suitcase.
“Work?”
“Berlin.”
He smiled faintly.
“Your German.”
“Yes.”
A silence.
Then he said, “I'm sorry.”
I had heard apologies before.
This one sounded different.
Maybe because I no longer needed it.
“I know.”
“I've wanted to tell you something.”
I waited.
“I had choices.”
He looked down.
“For years I blamed my mother. The trust. Pressure. Fear.”
Then he looked at me.
“But I chose.”
I said nothing.
“I chose to lie.”
That mattered.
Not enough to restore anything.
Enough to acknowledge reality.
“I hope you're doing better,” I said.
“I am trying.”
His flight was called.
He hesitated.
“Are you happy?”
I thought about my life.
Work.
Friends.
My condo.
Sunday dinners.
German.
Maya.
The strange, peaceful freedom of waking without wondering whether someone was lying beside me.
“Yes.”
His eyes glistened.
“I'm glad.”
And I believed him.
Then he walked toward his gate.
I watched for only a moment.
No longing.
No fantasy about what could have been.
Just recognition.
That chapter had ended.
My boarding announcement sounded.
May you like
I turned in the opposite direction.
And walked toward my own gate.
