Chapter 2 - Room 305

Damian did not remember entering the hotel room.
One moment he was standing in the hallway staring at Ariana and the baby.
The next he was several feet inside, the door closing softly behind him.
The suite was elegant but modest compared with Vale House. A bassinet stood near the bed. Bottles rested beside a small sterilizer on the counter. A folded blanket covered the back of a chair.
Every object felt like evidence from a life that had continued without him.
The baby remained in Ariana’s arms.
Damian stared at her.
“What’s her name?”
Ariana hesitated.
“Rose.”
His eyes immediately dropped to the bracelet.
The engraved flower.
Rose.
“Rose Vale?”
Ariana looked away.
“Rose Bennett.”
Her maiden name.
That hurt more than Damian expected.
“How old?”
“Five months.”
Five months.
The number hit like a physical blow.
Damian stepped back.
“Five?”
Ariana nodded.
He tried to construct the timeline.
Five months earlier, he had been in London negotiating the Calder acquisition.
Before that, Paris.
Berlin.
Zurich.
Eight months of travel during the most aggressive international expansion Vale Group had ever attempted.
Ariana had remained in Chicago.
Their calls had become brief.
Their marriage had begun collapsing through phone screens and unanswered messages.
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
Ariana laughed softly, but there was no humor in it.
“You really want to start there?”
“Yes.”
“You walk in after divorcing me for another woman and the first thing you want is an explanation?”
“I didn’t know about her.”
“No, Damian. You didn’t.”
Her voice remained quiet.
That controlled anger frightened him more than shouting would have.
Rose stirred.
Ariana immediately lowered her voice.
Damian noticed the instinctive tenderness with which she adjusted the baby against her shoulder.
He had never seen Ariana as a mother.
Now it seemed impossible that he had ever known her any other way.
“Can I…”
He stopped.
Ariana watched him.
Damian Vale, who had never struggled to finish a sentence in his life, looked helplessly at his daughter.
“Can I hold her?”
Ariana’s expression changed.
Pain.
Fear.
Love.
All of it crossed her face.
“She doesn’t know you.”
The words were not cruel.
That made them devastating.
“I know.”
Rose made a soft sound.
Damian’s eyes never left her.
“I know,” he repeated.
Ariana studied him for a long moment.
Then she slowly approached.
“Support her neck.”
His throat tightened.
“I know how to hold a baby.”
“Do you?”
He almost answered defensively.
Then he stopped.
No.
He didn’t.
Not really.
Ariana showed him where to place one hand.
Damian took Rose carefully.
The infant weighed almost nothing compared with the force of what he felt.
She blinked up at him.
Her tiny fingers curled against his shirt.
Damian froze.
Rose studied his face with solemn curiosity.
Then she grabbed one of the chains around his neck.
A strange sound escaped him.
Almost a laugh.
Almost a sob.
Ariana looked away.
Damian lowered his forehead toward Rose’s hair.
He smelled baby shampoo.
Warm milk.
Something soft and clean and completely unfamiliar.
His daughter.
His daughter had been alive for five months.
She had cried.
Slept.
Opened her eyes.
Smiled for the first time.
And he had missed all of it.
“Was I there?” he asked.
Ariana frowned.
“When she was born.”
“No.”
“Did you call me?”
Ariana’s face hardened.
“I tried.”
Damian looked up sharply.
“What?”
“I tried to reach you.”
“I never got a call.”
“I know.”
He stared at her.
Ariana crossed her arms over herself.
“Rose was born three weeks early. I went into labor at an apartment in Evanston.”
“Why were you in Evanston?”
“Because I wasn’t welcome at Vale House.”
Damian’s voice went cold.
“What does that mean?”
“It means your mother told me remaining there while you were overseas would create questions neither of you needed.”
“My mother told you to leave?”
“She called it temporary.”
His jaw tightened.
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“I did.”
“No, you didn’t.”
Ariana walked to a drawer near the bed.
She removed an old phone.
Not her current phone.
An older model Damian remembered seeing years ago.
She unlocked it and handed it to him.
“There.”
A message thread filled the screen.
Dozens of messages.
All sent to his number.
Damian, please call me.
I need to tell you something important.
Please don’t let Vanessa answer for you.
I’m at Northwestern.
The baby came early.
Damian stopped.
His blood turned cold.
“What is this?”
“The messages I sent.”
“I never received them.”
“I know.”
“How?”
Ariana took the phone back.
“Your corporate number was routed through the executive communications system during Europe.”
“Miles controlled that.”
“No. Vanessa did.”
Damian stared at her.
Vanessa had served as Vale Group’s interim strategic communications director during the European expansion.
She had managed his schedule.
His press.
Many of his calls.
“Why would she block your messages?”
“You should ask her.”
“I will.”
Ariana shook her head.
“That’s not enough.”
“What does that mean?”
“It means this isn’t a story where one evil woman manipulated everything and you were innocent.”
Damian’s face tightened.
“I didn’t say I was.”
“You believed her.”
Silence.
“You believed everyone except me.”
That landed deeper.
Ariana continued.
“Every time Vanessa told you I was becoming difficult, you accepted it. Every time your mother suggested I didn’t understand your responsibilities, you agreed. Every time I asked you to come home, there was another meeting.”
“I was building our future.”
“No.”
Her eyes filled.
“You were building your company.”
Damian had no answer.
Rose shifted in his arms.
He looked down.
The baby was falling asleep against him.
Something inside Damian cracked.
“Why did you hide her after I came home?”
Ariana’s expression changed.
“You came home two weeks ago.”
“Yes.”
“And what did you do?”
Damian knew.
He went directly into merger negotiations.
He spent one night at Vale House.
Then three at the Harrington estate.
Then he confronted Ariana about divorce.
“You asked for a divorce seventy-two hours after seeing me.”
He closed his eyes briefly.
“Why didn’t you just tell me about Rose?”
“I wanted to.”
“Then why didn’t you?”
Ariana walked toward the window.
“Because someone sent me photographs.”
Damian frowned.
“What photographs?”
Ariana opened another folder on the phone.
She handed it to him.
Damian looked.
Photographs of him and Vanessa.
Leaving restaurants.
Entering hotels during overseas meetings.
Standing closely at a private reception.
Nothing explicitly romantic.
But arranged together, they told a story.
The wrong story.
One image showed Vanessa kissing his cheek outside a Geneva hotel.
Damian remembered it.
He had turned away immediately afterward.
“I never slept with her.”
Ariana looked at him.
“You intended to marry her.”
“I know.”
“Three days after divorcing me.”
“I know.”
“You let me believe I had already been replaced long before you asked me to leave.”
Damian swallowed.
“Ariana…”
“The morning after Rose was born, Vanessa called me.”
His eyes sharpened.
“She what?”
“She told me you knew.”
“About Rose?”
“Yes.”
“And?”
Ariana’s voice shook for the first time.
“She said you wanted a paternity test before you would acknowledge her.”
Damian went completely still.
“I never said that.”
“I know that now.”
“How?”
“Because she sent me a document supposedly from your legal department.”
Damian held out his hand.
Ariana retrieved a folder.
Inside was a printed letter bearing Vale Group legal letterhead.
He read the first paragraph.
His anger became terrifyingly calm.
The document instructed Ariana not to publicly identify Damian as Rose’s father until formal testing and estate counsel review.
His signature appeared at the bottom.
A forged signature.
“This is fake.”
“I figured that out eventually.”
“When?”
“Two weeks ago.”
“When I came home.”
“Yes.”
“Then why didn’t you tell me?”
Ariana stared at him.
“Because the same night I learned it was fake, you told me our marriage had become a liability.”
Damian looked away.
He remembered every word.
He had been cruel without recognizing himself as cruel.
He had told Ariana that their lives had moved in different directions.
That Vanessa represented a partnership built around shared ambition.
That perhaps love was not enough.
Now he stood holding the consequence.
Rose opened her eyes.
She stared at him.
Damian felt suddenly unworthy of being looked at by something so innocent.
He gave the baby back to Ariana.
Not because he wanted to.
Because his hands had begun shaking.
“What does my mother know?”
Ariana’s expression became guarded.
“More than she told you.”
“How much?”
“She knew I was pregnant.”
Damian stared at her.
The room went silent.
“My mother knew you were pregnant?”
“Yes.”
“When?”
“Before Rose was born.”
Damian felt his stomach drop.
“She told me she only knew you were hiding something.”
Ariana gave a tired smile.
“Eleanor is very good at telling technically incomplete truths.”
“Why would she keep this from me?”
Ariana looked toward Rose.
“Because she was afraid.”
“Of what?”
“The Harrington deal.”
Damian’s expression hardened.
“Explain.”
“Your company had borrowed heavily for the European expansion. The merger wasn’t just growth. It was protection.”
Damian said nothing.
That information was confidential.
“How do you know?”
“Your mother told me.”
“When?”
“Six months ago.”
“Why?”
“Because she wanted me to understand what would happen if I made trouble.”
Anger surged through him.
“She threatened you?”
“She warned me.”
“What exactly did she say?”
Ariana’s eyes met his.
“She said if Vanessa believed Rose threatened the merger, the Harringtons would destroy you before they let that deal collapse.”
Damian almost laughed.
“The Harringtons don’t have that power.”
“They did then.”
Unfortunately, she was right.
Before several acquisitions closed, the Vale Group had been heavily exposed.
A public scandal.
A withdrawn credit guarantee.
One coordinated attack on Vale stock holdings.
The Harrington family could have caused enormous damage.
“But that still doesn’t explain why you didn’t trust me.”
Ariana’s eyes flashed.
“I trusted you for seven years.”
Damian said nothing.
“I trusted you every time you promised the next trip would be the last one. I trusted you when you said Vanessa was only business. I trusted you when your mother treated me like a temporary guest in my own home. I trusted you until trusting you started requiring me to ignore everything happening in front of me.”
Rose began fussing.
Ariana gently rocked her.
Damian watched.
“What do you want from me?”
Ariana’s face softened with sadness.
“Nothing.”
The answer terrified him.
“Ariana.”
“I don’t want your money.”
“I know.”
“I don’t want Vale House.”
“I know.”
“I don’t want you destroying people because you’re angry.”
His jaw tightened.
“I’m going to find out what happened.”
“Good.”
“And then?”
“And then you live with the truth.”
Damian stepped closer.
“I want my daughter.”
Ariana immediately stiffened.
“I didn’t say you couldn’t know her.”
“I want both of you.”
Her eyes closed briefly.
“You don’t get to decide that tonight.”
“I know.”
“Do you?”
“Yes.”
He looked at Rose.
Then back at Ariana.
“For once, yes.”
A knock sounded at the door.
Ariana flinched.
Damian turned.
Another knock.
Three precise taps.
Ariana looked suddenly frightened.
“Are you expecting someone?”
“No.”
Damian moved between Ariana and the door.
“Stay behind me.”
She frowned.
“Damian—”
He looked through the peephole.
Then his expression changed.
He opened the door.
Miles stood outside.
His normally composed face looked disturbed.
“What happened?” Damian asked.
Miles glanced at Ariana.
“I found something in the communications archive.”
Damian’s voice dropped.
“What?”
Miles held out a tablet.
“Messages between Vanessa and someone inside Vale House.”
Damian took it.
The first email had been sent eight months earlier.
The subject line contained only two words.
Ariana situation.
Damian read the exchange.
His breathing slowed.
Vanessa had written:
If she tells him before the merger closes, everything changes.
The response came from an address Damian knew immediately.
His mother’s private account.
Then make sure he doesn’t hear it from her.
Damian stared at the screen.
Ariana said nothing.
Miles looked grim.
“There’s more.”
Damian lifted his eyes.
Miles hesitated.
“The communications team didn’t just block Ariana.”
“What else did they do?”
“They created messages that looked like they came from you.”
Ariana went pale.
Damian’s voice became nearly emotionless.
“How many?”
“Enough to convince her you knew about the baby.”
Damian looked back at the woman he had once promised to protect.
He had spent three days believing he had ruined his marriage.
Now he understood something worse.
Someone had been dismantling it for months.
But the final email on Miles’s screen revealed that Vanessa’s plan had not ended with divorce.
It had only entered its second stage.
May you like
And this time, Rose was part of it.
