Chapter 4 - The Harrington Lie

Damian arrived at the rehabilitation center shortly after midnight.
Ariana stayed at the hotel with Rose.
Before he left, Damian had positioned two trusted security officers outside room 305.
Ariana objected immediately.
“I don’t need guards.”
“They aren’t there to keep you in.”
“I know.”
“They’re there because Vanessa mentioned Rose in a legal strategy before the engagement was even announced.”
Ariana eventually agreed.
Not because she trusted Damian.
Because she trusted his fear.
Miles drove with him.
Neither spoke until the city lights faded behind them.
Charles Vale’s rehabilitation center sat near the lake in Lake Forest, surrounded by bare trees and quiet roads.
Eleanor waited outside his room.
Damian walked past her.
“Damian.”
He stopped.
“Not yet.”
“You need to hear me.”
“I needed to hear you six months ago.”
Pain crossed her face.
Damian entered the room.
His father lay awake.
Charles Vale had once been physically imposing, a man whose presence could silence a boardroom without effort.
The stroke had changed him.
His left side remained weak. Speech required enormous concentration.
But his eyes were sharp.
“Dad.”
Charles looked toward him.
Damian had visited twice during the European expansion.
Twice in eight months.
Another failure he had disguised as necessity.
His father’s gaze moved toward Miles, then Eleanor.
“Out,” Charles managed.
Miles stepped outside.
Eleanor hesitated.
Charles looked at her.
“Out.”
She left.
Damian sat beside the bed.
“I found Ariana.”
Charles closed his eyes briefly.
“She has a daughter.”
His father’s fingers moved.
Damian leaned closer.
“Rose.”
Charles smiled faintly.
“You met her.”
A nod.
“She’s mine.”
Another nod.
Damian swallowed hard.
“You knew.”
Charles struggled for words.
“Too… late.”
“Too late for what?”
His father became frustrated.
Damian waited.
Finally Charles pointed toward the cabinet.
“Blue.”
Damian opened it.
A blue folder sat beneath several books.
Inside were financial documents.
Bank transfers.
Corporate memos.
Private correspondence.
Harrington Holdings.
Damian began reading.
The documents showed a pattern of covert debt purchases involving Vale subsidiaries.
Harrington-controlled shell companies had quietly acquired distressed obligations during the European expansion.
Damian looked up.
“They were positioning themselves to force the merger.”
Charles nodded.
“Vanessa?”
His father’s eyes hardened.
“Yes.”
Damian continued reading.
One memo contained discussions about “personal alignment.”
Marriage.
Public reputation.
Succession.
The Harrington family had not merely wanted a corporate merger.
They wanted control over the Vale future.
Damian felt sick.
“How did you get this?”
Charles struggled.
“Found… before.”
“Before your stroke?”
“Yes.”
“Did you tell Mom?”
Charles looked away.
That answer was enough.
“She knew.”
“Some.”
“Did she make a deal with them?”
His father’s expression became pained.
“Afraid.”
Damian thought of Eleanor.
Protect the family.
Protect the company.
For his mother, the two had always been the same thing.
“She thought if I married Vanessa, the Harringtons would stop.”
Charles nodded.
Damian leaned back.
“And Ariana?”
His father’s hand tightened.
“Not… safe.”
“What does that mean?”
“Vanessa… knew.”
“About the pregnancy?”
A nod.
“When?”
Charles slowly lifted two fingers.
“Two months?”
He shook his head.
“Two…”
“Weeks?”
A nod.
Damian felt cold.
Vanessa had known about Ariana’s pregnancy two weeks after Ariana discovered it.
“How?”
Charles became frustrated again.
Then whispered one word.
“Clinic.”
Damian frowned.
“The doctor?”
Charles shook his head.
“Board.”
Miles had mentioned Vanessa sat on a charitable hospital foundation.
Suddenly Damian understood.
Private information should never have been accessible.
But powerful families had ways of obtaining things they shouldn’t.
“Vanessa accessed Ariana’s medical information?”
Charles’s face tightened.
“Proof.”
He pointed again.
Inside the folder, Damian found an email.
He read it once.
Then again.
Vanessa had sent Eleanor a message seven months earlier.
If the pregnancy becomes public, Damian will never agree to the family arrangement.
Eleanor replied:
He must not be pressured while negotiations are unstable.
Vanessa:
Then we agree Ariana should remain quiet.
Eleanor:
Temporarily.
Vanessa:
Temporary solutions become permanent when handled correctly.
Damian’s vision blurred with anger.
His mother had not planned everything.
But she had opened the door.
Vanessa had walked through it.
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
Charles looked at him.
His expression held something Damian had rarely seen from his father.
Regret.
“Tried.”
“How?”
“Eleanor… stopped.”
Damian stared.
Charles shook his head urgently.
“No. Not… bad.”
“What are you saying?”
“Protect.”
“My mother thought she was protecting me.”
A nod.
Damian laughed bitterly.
“Everyone protected me until I lost my wife and missed five months of my daughter’s life.”
Charles’s eyes filled with tears.
Damian immediately regretted the cruelty.
“I’m sorry.”
His father reached for his hand.
“Boy.”
Damian leaned closer.
Charles forced the words.
“You… chose.”
Damian went still.
“What?”
“You… chose… work.”
Silence.
That hurt because it was true.
Charles continued slowly.
“They… lied.”
A pause.
“You… believed.”
Damian looked down.
The conspiracy could explain blocked calls.
Forged messages.
Manipulated circumstances.
But it could not explain why Damian had been so willing to believe his marriage had become inconvenient.
That responsibility belonged to him.
“Can I fix it?”
Charles’s grip tightened.
“Not… buy.”
Damian almost smiled.
“I know.”
“Stay.”
The word broke him.
Stay.
Not acquire.
Not negotiate.
Not control.
Stay.
“I will.”
Charles closed his eyes.
Damian sat beside him for several minutes.
Then he returned to the hallway.
Eleanor stood near the window.
Miles waited farther away.
Damian held the blue folder.
His mother saw it.
“You found Charles’s documents.”
“Yes.”
She lowered her eyes.
“How much did you know?”
“Not everything.”
“Try the truth this time.”
Eleanor took a breath.
“I knew the Harringtons were acquiring your debt.”
“And?”
“I knew Vanessa wanted more than a merger.”
“And?”
“I knew Ariana was pregnant.”
Damian stared.
“How could you look at me for months and say nothing?”
“Because your company was weeks away from a liquidity crisis.”
“I would have chosen my family.”
“Would you?”
His mother’s question stopped him.
Eleanor’s eyes filled.
“Look at what you did when you came home, Damian.”
He said nothing.
“You had no idea Ariana had given birth, but you knew your marriage was suffering. Did you stop? Did you ask what she needed? Did you choose her?”
His jaw tightened.
“No.”
“You chose the deal.”
Damian looked away.
Eleanor continued.
“That is why I was afraid.”
“So you decided for me.”
“Yes.”
“Then Vanessa exploited it.”
“Yes.”
“Did you know she was forging messages?”
“No.”
“Did you know she called Ariana after Rose was born?”
“No.”
“Did you know she was preparing to challenge paternity?”
Eleanor’s face changed.
“No.”
Damian believed her.
It didn’t absolve her.
But he believed her.
“Why did you take Rose to see Dad?”
Tears appeared in Eleanor’s eyes.
“Because he asked.”
“You kept her from me but let him meet her.”
“I knew what I had done by then.”
“Then why didn’t you tell me?”
“You were coming home.”
“That wasn’t an answer.”
Eleanor looked broken for the first time.
“I was ashamed.”
Damian stared at his mother.
“And I was afraid you would hate me.”
He almost laughed at the irony.
“So you stayed silent because telling the truth might cost you my love.”
Eleanor closed her eyes.
“Yes.”
“That sounds familiar.”
They both thought of Ariana.
Silence settled.
Then Miles approached quickly.
“Damian.”
Something in his tone changed the air.
“What?”
“You need to see this.”
He held out his phone.
A news alert filled the screen.
VALE HEIR SCANDAL? BILLIONAIRE’S EX-WIFE SEEN WITH MYSTERY INFANT DAYS AFTER DIVORCE
Damian’s blood went cold.
A photograph showed Ariana entering the Lakeview Grand.
Rose’s face was blurred, but the implication was obvious.
Another headline appeared.
SOURCES QUESTION PATERNITY CLAIM AHEAD OF VALE-HARRINGTON ANNOUNCEMENT
Damian looked at Miles.
“How did they get this?”
“We don’t know yet.”
He did.
Vanessa.
His phone rang.
Ariana.
Damian answered.
“Ariana?”
Her breathing sounded uneven.
“There are reporters downstairs.”
“I’m coming.”
“Damian—”
“I’m coming now.”
“There’s something else.”
His heart dropped.
“What?”
“Someone delivered papers.”
“What papers?”
Ariana’s voice trembled.
“A petition.”
“For what?”
She went silent for half a second.
Then said the words that made Damian’s anger disappear beneath something colder.
“They’re asking the court to prevent me from leaving Illinois with Rose until paternity and custody are resolved.”
Damian turned toward Eleanor.
Vanessa had just crossed a line no merger could justify.
But the legal filing contained one final surprise.
The petitioner was not Vanessa Harrington.
It was Damian Vale.
May you like
Or at least, that was what the forged signature at the bottom claimed.
