Chapter 5 - The Night Everything Broke

By the time Damian reached the hotel, twelve reporters were gathered outside the main entrance.
Miles directed the driver through the underground garage.
Damian entered through a service corridor.
His anger was no longer explosive.
It had become focused.
That frightened Miles.
“Don’t do anything reckless.”
Damian glanced at him.
“Define reckless.”
“Anything involving threats, private armies, destroying a company overnight, or throwing someone through a window.”
“I wasn’t planning the window.”
“That isn’t reassuring.”
Damian almost smiled.
Almost.
Then the elevator opened.
Room 305 stood at the end of the hallway.
The security officers nodded.
“No one entered.”
Damian knocked.
Ariana opened the door immediately.
Rose was asleep.
A legal packet lay across the table.
Damian walked toward it.
The first page bore his full name.
Damian Alexander Vale, Petitioner.
He read the filing.
The document claimed he had recently become aware Ariana might be attempting to present an infant as his biological child.
It requested temporary restrictions until genetic testing could be completed.
Damian’s face became expressionless.
“I didn’t authorize this.”
“I know.”
Ariana folded her arms.
“You believe me?”
“Yes.”
“Immediately?”
“Yes.”
She looked surprised.
Damian met her eyes.
“I should have done that more often.”
The words landed between them.
Ariana looked away.
Miles photographed every page.
“The filing was submitted electronically at 7:42 tonight,” he said.
“By whom?”
“The attorney from Vanessa’s email.”
Damian pulled out his phone.
“I’m calling him.”
Miles stopped him.
“No.”
Damian stared.
“We need evidence.”
“I have enough.”
“To know what happened. Not enough to prove it cleanly.”
Ariana agreed.
“He’s right.”
Damian looked at her.
She raised an eyebrow.
“Don’t act so shocked.”
Despite everything, something almost familiar passed between them.
Then Rose woke.
A small cry filled the room.
Ariana picked her up.
Damian watched helplessly.
“Can I do something?”
“You can warm the bottle.”
He blinked.
“How?”
Ariana stared.
“It’s not a nuclear reactor.”
“I know.”
“You looked less nervous buying a company in Germany.”
“I knew what the buttons did.”
For the first time that night, Ariana laughed.
It was tiny.
Brief.
But Damian felt the sound in his chest.
He followed her instructions with absurd concentration.
Bottle.
Warm water.
Temperature check.
When he returned, Rose had settled against Ariana.
“Do you want to feed her?” Ariana asked.
Damian stopped.
“Me?”
“No, Miles.”
Miles lifted both hands.
“I respectfully decline.”
Ariana almost smiled again.
Damian sat.
She handed Rose to him.
This time, he positioned her correctly without help.
Ariana noticed.
“You remembered.”
“I remember things that matter.”
Her eyes flickered.
He instantly understood the unintended cruelty of the sentence.
“I should have remembered that sooner.”
Ariana said nothing.
Rose began drinking.
Damian stared down at her.
Five months.
He could not recover them.
But perhaps fatherhood was not something measured only by what had already been missed.
Maybe it was measured by what he did next.
His phone vibrated.
Vanessa.
He ignored it.
Again.
Ignored.
A third time.
Ariana looked at the screen.
“She’ll keep calling.”
“Good.”
“Why?”
“People make mistakes when they panic.”
Miles nodded approvingly.
“Now you sound useful.”
Damian gave him a dark look.
Then a message appeared.
WE NEED TO TALK BEFORE THIS GETS WORSE.
Another.
I CAN FIX THE PRESS.
Another.
YOU DON’T KNOW WHAT ARIANA HAS BEEN DOING.
Damian handed the phone to Miles.
“Save everything.”
Ariana’s face tightened at the final message.
“What does she mean?”
“Nothing.”
“You don’t know that.”
Damian looked at her.
“No. But I’m not going to assume the worst about you because Vanessa wrote one sentence.”
Ariana became very still.
It was such a small thing.
Trusting her.
Yet he could see what it meant.
Rose finished the bottle.
Damian carefully lifted her against his shoulder.
“What now?”
“Burp her.”
He stared.
“How?”
Ariana demonstrated.
A few seconds later, Rose produced an impressively loud burp.
Miles coughed to hide a laugh.
Damian looked offended.
Ariana laughed openly.
The sound disappeared almost as quickly as it came.
But something had shifted.
Not forgiveness.
Not yet.
Something more fragile.
Possibility.
Miles’s phone rang.
He stepped away.
When he returned, his expression had changed.
“We have the login data.”
“For the filing?”
“Yes.”
“Where?”
“Harrington Tower.”
Damian’s eyes hardened.
“Vanessa’s office?”
“Her executive floor.”
Ariana exhaled.
“Can that prove she submitted it?”
“Not alone,” Miles said. “But we have another problem.”
“What?”
“The board called an emergency meeting for tomorrow morning.”
Damian frowned.
“Why?”
“Because the press story is affecting lender confidence.”
“So?”
“So the Harrington financing agreement contains a morality and governance clause.”
Damian understood instantly.
If scandal materially affected the Vale Group before closing, Harrington Holdings could demand accelerated repayment on several temporary facilities.
Ariana looked between them.
“What does that mean?”
Miles answered.
“It means Damian may have to choose tomorrow.”
“Between what?”
Damian’s voice became flat.
“The merger and publicly acknowledging Rose.”
Ariana stared at him.
The room became silent.
Damian already knew his answer.
But before he could speak, Ariana stood.
“No.”
He frowned.
“What?”
“You are not going to destroy your company because of me.”
“This isn’t because of you.”
“Hundreds of employees depend on Vale Group.”
“So does my daughter.”
“You can handle the paternity issue privately.”
Damian’s expression hardened.
“Absolutely not.”
“Damian—”
“I will not allow my daughter’s existence to be treated like a corporate inconvenience.”
Ariana stepped closer.
“And if thousands of people lose jobs?”
“I’ll protect them.”
“How?”
“I don’t know yet.”
“Then think before you react.”
Her voice rose slightly.
Rose stirred.
Both immediately quieted.
Ariana continued softly.
“This is what you always do. You decide what protecting someone means, and then you act without asking them.”
Damian stared at her.
She was right.
Again.
“What do you want?”
Ariana looked surprised.
He repeated the question.
“What do you want me to do?”
She looked at Rose.
Then at him.
“I want you to tell the truth.”
“Publicly?”
“Yes.”
“About Rose?”
“Yes.”
“About us?”
Ariana hesitated.
“Don’t make our marriage into a performance.”
“I won’t.”
“Don’t pretend we’re reconciled.”
“I won’t.”
“And don’t attack Vanessa without proof.”
That was harder.
Ariana noticed.
“Damian.”
“Fine.”
“Say it like you mean it.”
“I will wait for proof before I destroy Vanessa Harrington.”
Miles muttered, “Progress.”
Damian ignored him.
Ariana returned to the bed.
“What will you say?”
“The truth.”
“Which part?”
He looked at her.
“That Rose is my daughter.”
“You haven’t done a test.”
“I don’t need one.”
Ariana’s eyes filled.
“Damian.”
“I don’t.”
He walked closer.
“I know.”
Rose’s tiny hand opened against Ariana’s shoulder.
Damian touched one finger to her palm.
She grabbed it.
His voice softened.
“And if the entire city wants paperwork before it believes me, the entire city can wait.”
Ariana’s eyes shimmered.
For one moment, they stood inches apart.
Almost husband and wife again.
Then Miles interrupted.
“Sorry.”
They separated.
“What?” Damian asked.
“I found something.”
Miles opened his tablet.
A deleted voicemail had been recovered from the executive server.
Sent six months earlier.
From Ariana.
To Damian.
Miles pressed play.
Ariana’s voice filled the room.
Shaky.
Terrified.
“Damian, please call me. I don’t care about the merger. I don’t care if you’re angry. I’m pregnant. I wanted to tell you differently, but I can’t keep waiting. I love you. Please call me.”
The message ended.
Damian stared at the screen.
Ariana covered her mouth.
“I forgot that one.”
Miles looked grim.
“It never reached Damian’s account.”
“Who deleted it?” Damian whispered.
Miles turned the screen.
The administrator log showed one username.
VHARRINGTON
Damian closed his eyes.
Months of grief condensed into one moment.
When he opened them, he looked at Ariana.
“I would have come home.”
This time she believed him.
He could see it.
A tear rolled down her cheek.
“I know.”
The words nearly destroyed him.
Damian reached for her.
Then stopped himself.
He no longer assumed he had the right.
Ariana noticed.
After a long pause, she stepped forward and placed her forehead briefly against his chest.
Damian did not move.
He barely breathed.
Then his arms slowly closed around Ariana and Rose.
For several seconds, the three of them stood together.
Not healed.
Not reunited.
But no longer completely separated.
Then Miles’s phone rang again.
He answered.
His face changed.
“What happened?” Damian asked.
Miles lowered the phone.
“The board meeting has been moved up.”
“To when?”
“Eight in the morning.”
“And?”
“Harrington’s attorneys delivered an ultimatum.”
Damian’s eyes hardened.
Miles continued.
“If you publicly acknowledge Rose before the merger agreement is signed, they withdraw financing immediately.”
Ariana stepped away.
Damian looked down at his daughter.
For years, he had sacrificed home for business because he believed there would always be time to repair what work damaged.
Tomorrow morning, that lie would finally be tested.
May you like
And every powerful person in Chicago was waiting to see which life Damian Vale would choose.
