Chapter 14 - The Last Secret

The secret turned out not to be another betrayal.

It was a debt.

Years earlier, Ethan had borrowed money from Harold and Marjorie without telling me.

Later, he had repaid part of it using the joint account.

That explained several transfers.

It did not excuse the secrecy.

But it closed a financial mystery that had been hanging over everything.

The anonymous package came from an extended relative who believed I deserved the information.

My attorney reviewed it.

No new crisis emerged.

For once, a secret simply completed the picture.

I realized how conditioned I had become to expect disaster.

That was another cost of betrayal.

It teaches your nervous system to treat every knock as danger.

I refused to live that way.

I installed sensible security.

Organized my documents.

Updated my estate plan.

Then I stopped looking over my shoulder.

The house was secure.

My finances were secure.

More importantly, I trusted myself to respond if something went wrong.

That was better than believing nothing ever would.
