Chapter 17 - Ethan at the Door

Almost a year after the morning I left with one suitcase, Ethan returned.
He did not arrive unannounced.
He texted first.
I found something that belongs to you. May I drop it off?
I agreed.
He arrived carrying a wooden box.
Inside were letters I had written during an overseas assignment early in our marriage.
“I found them while moving.”
“Thank you.”
He looked healthier.
Calmer.
“I’m in therapy,” he said.
I nodded.
“I’m glad.”
“I’m not telling you because I expect anything.”
“I know.”
He looked toward the house.
“I used to think losing this place was the worst thing that could happen.”
“And now?”
“I realized I never lost the house.”
His eyes met mine.
“I lost the person who made it home.”
For a moment, the old love hurt.
Then it passed.
“I hope you build a good life, Ethan.”
“I hope you do too.”
“I already am.”
He smiled.
“I know.”
And then he left.
May you like
This time, neither of us looked back.
