Chapter 16 - The Key

When Marjorie left, she stopped at the door.

“I still have something.”

She opened her purse.

A key.

An old spare house key Ethan had given her months before the move.

My chest tightened.

“I never used it after that week,” she said.

Then she placed it in my palm.

“I should never have had it without your permission.”

I closed my fingers around it.

“Thank you.”

She nodded.

No speech.

No demand for forgiveness.

That was how I knew she had changed more than she claimed.

People who truly understand boundaries stop demanding rewards for respecting them.

After she left, I looked at the key.

Then I threw it away.

Not dramatically.

Just into the trash.
