Chapter 3 - A Lesson for a Three-Year-Old

Valentina didn't ask what Victor wanted.
Not immediately.
She looked at Owen.
He was shivering.
That ended the conversation.
“My son needs dry clothes and a doctor.”
Salvatore nodded toward security.
The doors unlocked.
Victor stepped forward.
“We aren't finished.”
Valentina looked at him.
“Our marriage is.”
Victor froze.
Celeste's expression changed.
Salvatore simply watched.
Valentina carried Owen out.
For the first time since she had married into the Morello family, nobody tried to stop her.
Twenty-five minutes later, Owen sat wrapped in blankets inside a private examination room.
The doctor listened to his lungs.
Valentina stood beside the bed.
“Is he okay?”
“He appears stable, but we'll monitor him.”
Owen looked at his mother.
“Mommy?”
“Yes?”
“Was I bad?”
Valentina's heart broke.
She sat beside him.
“No.”
“But Aunt Celeste said—”
“I don't care what she said.”
She gently touched his cheek.
“You did absolutely nothing wrong.”
“She said I needed a lesson.”
Valentina closed her eyes briefly.
“What lesson?”
Owen looked down.
“To be brave.”
Valentina swallowed.
“You don't prove bravery by hurting somebody.”
Owen considered that.
“Were you brave?”
She almost cried.
“I was scared.”
“But you jumped.”
Valentina kissed his forehead.
“Sometimes being brave means you're scared and you move anyway.”
Owen leaned against her.
She held him until he slept.
Then Valentina stepped into the hallway.
Arthur Bell was waiting.
“How did you find us?”
“I followed.”
“You shouldn't have.”
“I know.”
He held out a small black object.
A memory card.
Valentina didn't take it.
“What is that?”
“Insurance.”
“Against whom?”
Arthur gave a humorless smile.
“Tonight? Everyone.”
He explained that the conservatory's security system recorded continuously.
Victor had ordered the footage erased.
Arthur had intercepted a copy.
Valentina took the card.
“Why help me?”
Arthur looked through the window at Owen.
“Because there are rules even men like Victor are supposed to follow.”
“And drowning children violates them?”
“It should.”
Valentina studied him.
“What does Victor want?”
Arthur hesitated.
“The chair.”
“What chair?”
“The one Salvatore is leaving.”
Valentina understood.
Leadership.
Control.
Power.
Victor had spent years waiting to inherit authority from his uncle.
“But why test me?”
“Because Salvatore doesn't trust Victor.”
“Then don't give him the position.”
“It isn't that simple.”
“It sounds incredibly simple.”
Arthur almost smiled.
“You don't understand the Morellos.”
“No.”
Valentina looked through the glass at her sleeping son.
“But I'm going to.”
Arthur's expression became serious.
“Be careful what you learn.”
“Why?”
“Because once you understand what tonight was really about, you won't be able to return to the life you had yesterday.”
Valentina touched the memory card in her palm.
“That life ended when Victor held me back.”
Arthur nodded.
Then he said something unexpected.
“There were supposed to be safeguards.”
Valentina turned.
“What?”
“Celeste wasn't supposed to push Owen into the deep section.”
“Supposed to?”
“She changed the plan.”
Valentina stepped toward him.
“What was the plan?”
Arthur realized he had said too much.
“Arthur.”
He sighed.
“The original test involved Owen being frightened. Nothing more.”
“What does that mean?”
“I don't know all the details.”
“Then tell me what you know.”
Arthur looked toward the hospital corridor.
“They were supposed to create a situation where you had to choose.”
“Between what?”
“Owen and Victor.”
Valentina stared at him.
“And Celeste changed it?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“I don't know.”
But Valentina remembered Celeste laughing.
She remembered the woman's hand against Owen's back.
And suddenly she suspected the test had given Celeste something she had wanted for a long time:
Permission.
Valentina's phone vibrated.
Unknown number.
She answered.
No voice.
Only breathing.
“Who is this?”
Silence.
Then a woman spoke.
“You should look at the recording before Victor finds you.”
The call ended.
Valentina looked at Arthur.
“Did you tell anyone about the card?”
“No.”
She inserted it into her phone with an adapter Arthur provided.
The first recording opened.
The timestamp was from forty-three minutes before Owen entered the pond.
Victor and Celeste stood beside the water.
Valentina increased the volume.
Victor said, “Nothing happens to him. Do you understand?”
Celeste smiled.
“Of course.”
Then another voice came from outside the camera frame.
A woman's voice.
“If Valentina chooses the child, Victor loses everything.”
Valentina froze.
Arthur leaned closer.
“Who is that?”
“I don't know.”
The recording continued.
Victor turned toward the unseen woman.
“And if she chooses me?”
The voice answered:
“Then Owen was never safe in that family anyway.”
Valentina stopped the video.
Her hands trembled.
Not from fear.
From fury.
Someone else had designed the test.
Someone Victor obeyed.
Someone Celeste knew.
And whoever she was, she had been close enough to the Morello family to decide whether a three-year-old child could be used as leverage.
Valentina looked at the frozen video.
In the polished glass behind Victor, there was a reflection.
Only part of a woman's face.
But Valentina recognized the diamond earrings.
She had seen them earlier that evening.
May you like
On someone she trusted.
The woman behind the test had been standing beside Valentina during dinner, smiling at Owen as though she loved him.
