Chapter 12 - Someone Comes for Owen

Three weeks passed.

Owen began sleeping through the night again.

That felt like victory.

Valentina rented a small house far from the Morello estate.

No marble.

No guards visible outside.

No donor dinners.

Owen loved the backyard.

He spent afternoons pushing toy trucks through the grass.

One morning he asked, “Can I learn swimming?”

Valentina froze.

“Are you sure?”

He nodded.

“I don't want the water to be scary forever.”

She hugged him.

“Then we'll learn together.”

His first lesson happened in a shallow heated pool.

Valentina stayed beside him.

No pressure.

No forced bravery.

When Owen finally put his face in the water for two seconds, he surfaced laughing.

“I did it!”

“Yes, you did.”

Valentina cried afterward where he couldn't see.

But peace remained fragile.

That evening, a black car stopped outside.

Victor stepped out.

Valentina met him at the gate.

“You can't come unannounced.”

“I know.”

“Then why are you here?”

“Because someone followed Owen's instructor.”

Her body stiffened.

“Who?”

“We don't know.”

Valentina contacted investigators.

Security footage revealed a man photographing the house.

He was identified quickly.

A private investigator.

Hired by Michael Bell months earlier.

The contract had never been canceled.

Michael was still in custody.

Arthur too.

But their machinery continued operating.

Valentina understood something important.

Removing powerful people didn't remove the systems they built.

She couldn't spend Owen's childhood running from shadows.

So she made another decision.

She went public.

Not with everything.

Enough.

She issued a statement describing the pond incident and confirming she had separated from Victor.

She refused to discuss criminal allegations still under investigation.

But she said one thing clearly:

“My son will not be used to settle adult disputes.”

The story exploded.

Victor's reputation collapsed.

Sponsors withdrew from Morello charities.

Board members resigned.

People who had remained silent began contacting investigators.

The family fortress started cracking from the outside.

Then Victor did something nobody expected.

He released his own statement.

He admitted restraining Valentina.

He admitted prioritizing orders over his child's safety.

He didn't excuse it.

He didn't blame Celeste.

He didn't blame Salvatore.

He said:

“I failed my son.”

Valentina read the statement twice.

She didn't forgive him.

But for the first time, she believed he might understand what accountability meant.

That night Owen asked:

“Is Daddy bad?”

Valentina sat beside him.

“People aren't always just good or bad.”

“Daddy did bad?”

“Yes.”

“Can he do good?”

Valentina thought carefully.

“Yes.”

“Will he?”

“I don't know.”

Owen nodded as though this answer was enough.

Perhaps children understood uncertainty better than adults.

Then he showed her a picture he had drawn.

Three figures.

Owen.

Valentina.

Victor.

They were standing beside blue water.

Nobody was falling.

Everyone was holding hands.

Valentina swallowed.

“What's this?”

“Our family when nobody's mean anymore.”

She kissed his forehead.

“I like that.”

But downstairs, her phone began ringing.

Daniel.

She answered.

“Valentina, turn on the news.”

Salvatore Morello had been formally charged.

Arthur Bell had agreed to cooperate.

And in exchange, he had provided investigators with one final piece of evidence.

A recording of Victor.

From years earlier.

The report claimed it connected Victor to the surveillance of Valentina's father.

May you like

Victor's redemption had barely begun.

Now Valentina had to discover whether the man asking for another chance had known far more about her father's death than he admitted.
