Chapter 11 - The Name Hidden in the Ledger

Michael Bell's name appeared seventeen times.
Valentina and Daniel spent the night examining the ledger.
Payments.
Companies.
Properties.
One address appeared repeatedly.
An abandoned Morello winery outside the city.
Valentina wanted to go.
Daniel refused.
“You have a child.”
“That's why I'm going.”
“That's why you're not.”
He contacted investigators instead.
The winery was searched.
Empty.
But they found documents.
Arthur's plan was bigger than succession.
He had spent years quietly acquiring Morello assets through shell companies.
Salvatore controlled the family publicly.
Arthur had been buying it underneath him.
Victor arrived after midnight.
Valentina almost refused to let him inside.
“I know where Michael is.”
That changed things.
“Where?”
“Our father's cabin.”
Celeste looked up.
“Why there?”
“Because nobody knows it exists except family.”
Valentina stared at Victor.
“Then Michael shouldn't know.”
Victor nodded.
“Unless Mother told him.”
Evelyn.
Again.
They called her.
No answer.
They drove to the estate.
Empty.
A note waited on the dining table.
DON'T FOLLOW ME.
Victor cursed.
Celeste started crying.
Valentina remained still.
“She went to Michael.”
“Why?” Victor asked.
“Because she thinks she can fix it.”
They reached the cabin near dawn.
Evelyn's car was outside.
Valentina called police before approaching.
Then they heard shouting.
Michael emerged.
He wasn't armed.
Evelyn followed.
Arthur came last.
Alive.
Victor stared at him.
“You.”
Arthur smiled.
“Victor.”
Valentina stepped forward.
“This ends now.”
Arthur looked almost affectionate.
“My dear, you still think endings are declarations.”
“No.”
Sirens sounded in the distance.
“Sometimes they're sirens.”
Arthur's smile disappeared.
Michael ran.
Victor instinctively moved to chase him.
Valentina stopped him.
“Let them.”
Police vehicles appeared through the trees.
Arthur looked at Evelyn.
“You betrayed me.”
Evelyn shook her head.
“No.”
She looked at Valentina.
“I finally stopped betraying her.”
Arthur and Michael were detained.
Evelyn surrendered documents proving the conspiracy.
For the first time, the Morello family's secrets were no longer controlled by Morellos.
But while officers searched the cabin, one detective approached Valentina.
“We found something you should see.”
Inside a locked room was a wall covered in photographs.
Valentina.
Victor.
Celeste.
Evelyn.
Salvatore.
And Owen.
Hundreds of photographs.
At the center was a handwritten chart.
One name had been circled repeatedly.
Not Valentina.
Not Victor.
Owen.
Beside it were the words:
THE ONLY LEVER SHE WILL NEVER ABANDON.
Valentina stared.
Arthur hadn't merely studied her.
He had identified Owen as the mechanism through which she could always be controlled.
She tore the paper from the wall.
“No.”
Victor stood behind her.
“What?”
Valentina looked at him.
“This ends with us.”
She ripped the chart in half.
May you like
“No more children inherit this.”
And for the first time, Victor agreed without hesitation.
