Chapter 10 - The Man Richard Left Behind

The police took over the immediate investigation.

Ethan hated surrendering control.

Maya hated needing protection.

Noah hated that everyone suddenly told him where he could and couldn't go.

“Why can't we go home?” he asked.

“Because we're having an adventure,” Maya said.

“When does adventure stop?”

Maya looked at Ethan.

“Soon.”

Noah frowned.

“Adults say soon when they don't know.”

Ethan nearly laughed.

“He's definitely yours,” Maya muttered.

The police did not believe Noah faced an immediate kidnapping threat, but Pike's list was disturbing enough to justify caution.

Graham Pike had disappeared before anyone could question him.

More troubling was what investigators discovered in Richard Caldwell's archived payments.

Pike had received money indirectly until six months after Richard's death.

Someone had continued paying him.

The account belonged to the Caldwell Family Trust.

Only three people possessed authorization.

Margaret.

Ethan.

And the trust administrator, Walter Brenner.

Ethan went directly to Brenner.

The elderly attorney looked genuinely shocked.

“I did not authorize those transfers.”

“Then who did?”

“Your mother could have.”

“She says she didn't.”

Brenner removed his glasses.

“There is another possibility.”

“What?”

“Your father's automated instructions.”

Ethan stared.

“Another dead-man mechanism?”

“Richard established dozens.”

“Apparently death wasn't enough to stop him from controlling people.”

Brenner looked uncomfortable.

“Some payments were scheduled years in advance.”

“Can you access the instructions?”

“With court approval.”

“Get it.”

It took forty-eight hours.

The records revealed that Richard had instructed Pike to continue monitoring “threats to Caldwell family stability” for five years.

Ethan read the phrase in disbelief.

His father had built a surveillance system capable of continuing after death.

But none of the instructions mentioned threatening Maya.

Nor leaking information.

Someone had changed Pike's assignment.

Who?

The answer arrived unexpectedly.

Victoria called Ethan.

“I found something.”

They met at a quiet restaurant.

Victoria looked tired.

She placed an envelope on the table.

“I received this two months before our engagement announcement.”

Inside was a letter from Graham Pike.

Ethan read it.

Pike warned Victoria that Maya Bennett might “reappear” and potentially destabilize Ethan's public life.

“He contacted you?”

“Yes.”

“And you never told me?”

“I thought it was ridiculous.”

“Why keep the letter?”

“Because your father taught everyone around him to keep receipts.”

Ethan couldn't argue.

“Did you respond?”

“No.”

“He approached you again?”

“Once.”

“When?”

“The week before the Harrove gala.”

Ethan looked up sharply.

“What did he say?”

“That I should convince you not to attend.”

“Why?”

“He wouldn't explain.”

Ethan's thoughts raced.

Pike knew Maya would be there.

“How?”

Victoria shook her head.

“I don't know.”

“Did you tell him we were attending?”

“No.”

Then Victoria said something more important.

“He wasn't worried about Maya seeing you.”

“What was he worried about?”

“You seeing Noah.”

Ethan's stomach tightened.

Pike had known.

He had known Noah was Ethan's son.

And he had actively tried to prevent them from meeting.

Exactly as Richard once had.

But why continue after Richard died?

Later Ethan called Maya.

“I need to ask you something.”

“What?”

“Did anyone contact you before the gala?”

She became quiet.

“Maya?”

“I got an email.”

“When?”

“A week before.”

“What did it say?”

“That an anonymous donor wanted to pay Noah's future education if I skipped the gala.”

Ethan stood.

“You never mentioned this?”

“I thought it was spam.”

“Do you still have it?”

“Yes.”

Investigators traced the email through several anonymous servers.

But attached metadata pointed toward one organization.

The Caldwell Foundation.

Victoria's foundation.

She became the obvious suspect.

News outlets learned within hours.

FORMER FIANCÉE LINKED TO SECRET CHILD SCANDAL

Victoria called Ethan furious.

“I didn't send it.”

“I believe you.”

“Do you?”

“Yes.”

“Then say so publicly.”

Ethan hesitated.

Not because he doubted her.

Because every public statement deepened the scandal.

Victoria heard the hesitation.

“You defended Maya immediately.”

“This is different.”

“Is it?”

Ethan rubbed his forehead.

“I will correct anything false.”

“No. I’m asking whether you'll stand beside me the way you stood beside her.”

The question was fair.

So Ethan did.

That afternoon, Caldwell Meridian released a statement saying there was no evidence Victoria had participated in threats or harassment.

Maya saw it.

When Ethan called later, she said quietly, “You did the right thing.”

“She deserved it.”

“Yes.”

A pause.

Then Maya added:

“I’m glad you didn't let what happened between you change that.”

Ethan smiled faintly.

“You sound surprised.”

“I’m updating my opinion of you.”

“From terrible to mediocre?”

“Let's not get reckless.”

He laughed.

The police finally located Pike three days later.

He hadn't fled.

He was in a hospital outside Philadelphia after suffering injuries in a car accident.

Ethan and investigators interviewed him.

Pike looked weak but alert.

“Did you send the photograph of Noah?”

“Yes.”

Maya's fear became anger when Ethan later told her.

“Why?”

Pike answered that himself.

“I wanted Caldwell to investigate.”

Ethan stared.

“You frightened a mother and child because you wanted my attention?”

“I couldn't contact you directly.”

“You had my number.”

“I didn't know who I could trust.”

“Trust about what?”

Pike looked toward the detective.

“Richard Caldwell hired me to watch Maya Bennett.”

“I know.”

“But before he died, he changed his instructions.”

Ethan leaned forward.

“How?”

“He told me if you ever discovered Noah, I should reveal everything.”

Ethan froze.

“Everything?”

Pike nodded.

“Richard regretted what he'd done.”

That possibility had never occurred to Ethan.

“Then why all the games?”

“Because someone else took control of my contract after Richard died.”

“Who?”

Pike's face tightened.

“I don't know.”

“You expect me to believe that?”

“The instructions came through Brenner's office.”

Ethan glanced at the detective.

“Walter Brenner?”

“Someone using his credentials.”

“What did they want?”

“To keep Maya and Noah away from you permanently.”

“Why?”

Pike shook his head.

“I never knew.”

Ethan stood.

Pike grabbed his wrist.

“One thing.”

Ethan looked down.

“Your father recorded a confession before he died.”

“Where?”

“Harrove University.”

Ethan stared.

“Why Harrove?”

“Because that's where he first decided Maya was a threat.”

Pike released him.

“The recording explains everything.”

“Where is it?”

“In the university archive.”

“What am I looking for?”

Pike smiled weakly.

“A donation made the year Noah was born.”

Ethan returned to Harrove the next morning.

Deep in the university archives, an administrator brought him a sealed box connected to Richard Caldwell's donation.

Inside was an old hard drive.

One video file.

Richard appeared on screen.

Older.

Sick.

For several seconds he said nothing.

Then:

“Ethan, if you're watching this, I failed.”

Ethan stopped breathing.

Richard continued.

“I told myself I was protecting you. The truth is, I was protecting the version of you I wanted.”

Then he revealed the one fact nobody had expected.

Maya's disappearance had never been only about Ethan's company.

Richard Caldwell had been terrified that if Ethan married Maya, a secret from Richard's own past would become public.

May you like

And Maya had discovered that secret.
