Chapter 7 - The Woman Who Stopped Richard Caldwell

Margaret did not defend herself when Ethan returned.

Instead she unlocked a cabinet in the library and removed a box.

“I wondered when Walter would tell you.”

Ethan stared at it.

“What is this?”

“Everything I kept.”

Inside were copies of Richard's proposed custody petition, reports from private investigators, medical information Richard had no moral right to possess, and pages of notes about Maya.

Ethan became increasingly disgusted.

“She was pregnant and alone, and he had people following her?”

“Yes.”

“Why did you let him?”

“I didn't know at first.”

Margaret sat across from him.

“When I discovered what he was planning, I told him if he filed that petition, I would leave him and testify for Maya.”

Ethan looked up.

“He listened?”

“He knew I meant it.”

“So he abandoned the custody plan.”

“Yes.”

“Then why didn't you tell me?”

Margaret's eyes filled.

“Because I was a coward in one direction and brave in another.”

Ethan remained silent.

“I convinced myself preventing Richard from taking Maya's child was enough. I told myself telling you would create another battle, and Maya had already left New York.”

“You could have found her.”

“Yes.”

“You could have told me.”

“Yes.”

“You could have told her I hadn't rejected her.”

“Yes.”

Margaret did not excuse herself.

That made Ethan's anger harder to sustain.

“I failed both of you,” she whispered.

“And Noah.”

“And Noah.”

Ethan closed the box.

“Maya needs to see this.”

“I know.”

When he told Maya, she reacted exactly as he expected.

She became furious.

Then frightened.

“He had investigators?”

“They're gone.”

“You don't know that.”

“My father is dead.”

“People he paid aren't.”

Ethan remained calm.

“I will give you every document.”

“I want copies.”

“You'll have originals.”

She stared.

“Why originals?”

“Because they're about you.”

The answer disarmed her.

That evening, they sat at Maya's dining table while Noah slept.

For two hours they reviewed Richard's file.

Maya's face hardened as she saw photographs of herself leaving medical appointments.

“This was taken outside my obstetrician.”

“I’m sorry.”

“You didn't do it.”

“It was my family.”

“That isn't the same.”

Ethan looked at her.

“You don't have to protect me.”

“I’m not.”

She flipped another page.

Then stopped.

A photograph showed Maya heavily pregnant, standing outside a grocery store.

Her hand rested over her belly.

Ethan stared.

“That was three weeks before Noah was born.”

Maya nodded.

He touched the edge of the photograph.

“I've never seen you pregnant.”

The anger in the room softened.

Maya looked at him.

“You would've hated it.”

“Why?”

“I cried because a restaurant forgot my pickles.”

Ethan smiled.

“You cried when Harrove canceled the astronomy club's funding.”

“That was legitimate.”

“You weren't in the astronomy club.”

“It was about principle.”

He laughed quietly.

Maya smiled.

Then Ethan's eyes returned to the photo.

“I should have been there.”

Maya's expression became sad.

“Yes.”

The honesty hurt, but he needed it.

“What was his birth like?”

“Long.”

“Were you scared?”

“Terrified.”

“Who was with you?”

“Lena.”

Ethan nodded.

“I wish I'd known.”

“I know.”

They sat silently.

Then Maya reached across the table.

Her hand covered his.

It was the first deliberate touch between them since the gala.

Ethan didn't move.

Neither did she.

“I believe you now,” Maya whispered.

He looked at her.

“You believe I didn't know?”

“Yes.”

Something inside him loosened.

He turned his hand beneath hers.

Their fingers nearly intertwined.

Then Noah called from the bedroom.

“Mommy!”

Maya stood immediately.

The moment disappeared.

But not entirely.

The next morning, Ethan received a message from Caldwell Meridian's communications director.

Call me immediately.

A story had appeared online.

BILLIONAIRE CEO'S SECRET CHILD REVEALED AT ELITE UNIVERSITY GALA

There were photographs.

Ethan approaching Maya.

Noah staring at him.

Victoria standing nearby.

The article contained speculation about paternity.

Worse, it named Maya.

By noon reporters had located her apartment building.

Maya called Ethan.

Her voice shook with fury.

“There are cameras outside my home.”

“I’m handling it.”

“My son can't go outside.”

“I know.”

“You said this wouldn't happen.”

“I said I wouldn't cause it.”

“That distinction doesn't help Noah.”

Ethan stood.

“I can send security.”

“I don't want strangers surrounding him.”

“They won't come inside.”

“Ethan—”

“Maya, someone's already exposed you. Please let me protect the building while we figure out what happened.”

Silence.

Finally:

“Fine.”

Ethan's communications team traced the story.

The reporter refused to reveal the source.

But the initial email apparently contained details very few people knew.

The child's age.

The relationship timeline.

The DNA test.

Ethan stared at the report.

Only a handful of people knew the test had happened.

Maya.

Lena.

Ethan.

Victoria.

Daniel.

The clinic.

And perhaps his mother.

Someone close had leaked it.

That evening Ethan arrived at Maya's apartment.

A dozen reporters crowded behind barriers.

Questions exploded.

“Mr. Caldwell, is Noah Bennett your biological son?”

“Did Ms. Bennett hide him?”

“Are you seeking custody?”

“Did the child cause your breakup with Victoria Hale?”

Ethan ignored them.

He entered the building.

Maya opened her apartment door.

Her expression was exhausted.

Noah was asleep.

“They shouted his name when I picked him up from preschool,” she said.

Ethan's jaw tightened.

“I’m sorry.”

“I don't care about me.”

“I know.”

“I want him out of this.”

“So do I.”

“How?”

Ethan had already made the decision.

“Tomorrow I’m holding a press conference.”

Maya stared.

“No.”

“Listen.”

“No press conference involving Noah.”

“It won't involve him.”

“What are you going to say?”

“The truth.”

“Which truth?”

“That Noah is my son.”

Maya went still.

“And that you didn't hide him from me.”

“Ethan—”

“I won't let them turn you into the woman who trapped a billionaire.”

Her expression softened slightly.

“You don't have to destroy your privacy.”

“My privacy was already destroyed.”

He looked toward Noah's bedroom.

“But I can protect his mother.”

Maya stared at him for a long moment.

“What happens to your company?”

“I don't know.”

“Your board?”

“I don't know.”

“Victoria?”

“We're finished.”

Maya shook her head.

“You're changing everything at once.”

“No.”

Ethan stepped closer.

“Everything changed the moment Noah looked across that ballroom.”

Maya's breath caught.

For a second, the space between them became dangerously small.

Then Ethan's phone rang.

His communications director.

He answered.

“What?”

A pause.

His expression changed.

“When?”

Maya watched him.

“What's wrong?”

Ethan ended the call.

“The board scheduled an emergency meeting.”

“Because of the story?”

“Partly.”

“What else?”

Ethan looked at her.

“One of our largest investors received a copy of my father's private file on you.”

Maya went pale.

“Who sent it?”

“We don't know.”

“Ethan, those reports contain my medical information.”

“I know.”

Her voice dropped.

“Someone isn't just leaking a story.”

“No.”

Ethan looked toward the curtained window where photographers waited below.

“Someone is trying to make you look dangerous.”

May you like

And whoever had started it had access to secrets that should have died with Richard Caldwell.
