Chapter 2 - Fifteen Empty Chairs

At seven the next morning, Kate woke to find Damon Blackwell sitting outside her mother's hospital room.

For several seconds, she thought the medication was making her hallucinate.

Damon belonged in penthouses, private clubs, and rooms where men negotiated billion-dollar deals.

He did not belong beneath fluorescent hospital lights drinking terrible coffee from a paper cup.

Yet there he was.

His tuxedo jacket was gone. His sleeves were rolled to his forearms. He looked as though he had not slept.

Kate pushed herself upright.

"What are you doing here?"

Damon glanced over.

"Waiting."

"For what?"

"You to wake up."

Her eyes dropped to the cast covering her arm.

Memory returned.

Preston.

The storage room.

Damon's phone call.

The gates closing.

Kate's heart accelerated.

"What happened last night?"

"Your arm was treated."

"That's not what I mean."

Damon said nothing.

"Where is Preston?"

"At his father's house."

"Did you hurt him?"

"No."

The answer came immediately.

Kate searched his face.

"Then what did you do?"

"I removed his protection."

She frowned.

"What does that mean?"

"It means fifteen people who spent years helping Preston avoid consequences no longer work for the Caldwell family."

Kate stared at him.

"Fifteen?"

"Yes."

"What did you do to them?"

"Some resigned. Three are speaking with federal investigators. Two discovered their employers had been stealing from them. Several decided retirement somewhere far away suddenly sounded attractive."

"And the others?"

Damon took another sip of coffee.

"They made similarly intelligent decisions."

Kate didn't know whether to feel relieved or terrified.

"You did all that overnight?"

"No."

His eyes met hers.

"I started something overnight."

That distinction stayed with her.

Later that morning, Damon drove Kate and her mother home himself.

It was the first time Kate had seen him behind the wheel.

No driver.

No security detail.

Just Damon.

Her mother, Evelyn, slept in the back seat.

Kate stared through the passenger window.

"Why are you helping us?"

"Because you work for me."

"That can't be the whole reason."

"No."

"Then what's the other reason?"

Damon didn't answer.

When they reached Kate's small apartment, two nurses were waiting.

Kate stopped.

"What is this?"

"Your mother needs home care."

"I can't afford—"

"It's covered."

"By who?"

"Me."

"No."

Damon looked at her.

"No?"

"I can't owe you that."

"You don't."

"Nobody pays seventy thousand dollars without expecting something."

For the first time, genuine irritation appeared in his face.

"Do you believe I'm asking you for something?"

"No."

"Then stop turning kindness into debt."

The words hit harder than Kate expected.

She looked away.

Damon softened.

"Your mother needs treatment. You need time to recover. That's all."

"Why?"

Again, that question.

This time Damon answered.

"Because someone should have done it for my sister."

Kate turned toward him.

"You have a sister?"

"Had."

The single word ended the conversation.

Three days passed.

Then Kate received an envelope.

Inside was a copy of an old photograph.

A young woman stood outside a university building.

She looked twenty.

Dark hair.

Bright smile.

Behind her stood a teenage Preston Caldwell.

On the back someone had written:

ELENA BLACKWELL — 2015

Kate's hands went cold.

That evening, Damon arrived.

She placed the photograph on the table.

"Who sent this?"

"I did."

"Why?"

"Because you deserve to know why Caldwell scares me less than he scares you."

Kate looked at Elena.

"What happened to her?"

Damon remained silent for so long that Kate thought he wouldn't answer.

Then he sat across from her.

"Eleven years ago, Elena attended a fundraiser at the Caldwell family's country club."

Kate's stomach tightened.

"Preston was there?"

"Yes."

"What happened?"

"She came home frightened."

Damon looked at the photograph.

"She wouldn't tell me why."

Kate understood immediately.

"She was protecting you."

"No. She was protecting herself from what she thought I might do."

"What did you do?"

"Nothing."

Kate blinked.

Damon's jaw tightened.

"She begged me to leave it alone. So I did."

His voice had become distant.

"Three months later, she disappeared."

Kate stared at him.

"They never found her?"

"No."

"And you think Preston—"

"I think there are questions that were never answered."

Kate felt sick.

"Why wasn't he investigated?"

"He was."

"And?"

"Witnesses changed their stories. Security footage disappeared. Employees suddenly couldn't remember seeing Elena."

Kate looked down at the photograph.

"Fifteen men."

Damon nodded.

"The same network?"

"Some of them."

Now Kate understood.

Last night hadn't been revenge.

It had been demolition.

Damon was tearing down the wall around Preston Caldwell.

One brick at a time.

"Why now?"

"Because you said his name."

Kate looked up.

"For eleven years, I had suspicion. Last night, I had a pattern."

Damon leaned forward.

"I won't make the same mistake twice."

That afternoon, Kate gave a formal statement.

She expected humiliation.

Instead, Damon arranged for a female investigator and attorney to meet her privately.

Kate told everything.

The locked library.

Preston's words.

His hand.

Her attempt to escape.

Her arm striking the desk.

When it was over, she cried.

Not because she regretted speaking.

Because she finally realized how long she had trained herself to remain silent.

Damon waited outside.

When she emerged, he didn't ask what she had said.

He simply handed her coffee.

"Done?"

She nodded.

"Done."

That night, Senator Caldwell appeared on television.

He described allegations against his son as a "misunderstanding."

Kate turned off the screen.

Five minutes later, her phone rang.

Unknown number.

She almost ignored it.

Then she answered.

"Hello?"

Silence.

"Hello?"

A woman's voice whispered:

"Kate Bennett?"

"Yes."

"You don't know me."

Kate sat straighter.

"But I know Preston Caldwell."

Kate's blood chilled.

"Who is this?"

"My name is Rachel."

A shaky breath.

"I saw the news."

Kate said nothing.

Then Rachel whispered:

"You're not the first."

Kate closed her eyes.

"How many?"

There was a pause.

"I know of six."

Kate's heart stopped.

But Rachel wasn't finished.

May you like

"And one of them was Damon Blackwell's sister."
