Chapter 5 - The Secret Inside Blackwell House

Adrian Cross told them the truth until sunrise.

Damon's father, Thomas Blackwell, had spent years maintaining an alliance with Senator Caldwell.

Not friendship.

Mutual survival.

Caldwell provided political access.

Thomas provided influence.

Neither man wanted Preston's behavior exposed because an investigation could uncover their financial arrangements.

But when Elena discovered evidence, Thomas faced an impossible choice.

Protect the alliance.

Or protect his daughter.

In the end, he chose Elena.

Secretly.

Victor Shaw moved her.

Thomas financed her disappearance.

Then he began dismantling his relationship with Caldwell.

"He planned to expose everything," Adrian said.

"What stopped him?" Damon asked.

"His heart."

Thomas died before he could complete it.

Adrian inherited the evidence.

Damon stared at him.

"You had it for nine years?"

"Yes."

"Why didn't you tell me?"

"Because Thomas made me promise."

"My father is dead."

"He believed Caldwell would destroy Elena if the evidence surfaced before she was safe."

Damon slammed his palm against the table.

Kate flinched.

He saw it immediately.

His anger vanished.

"I'm sorry."

She nodded.

Adrian placed a flash drive on the table.

"This is everything."

Financial records.

Messages.

Payments.

Names.

Dates.

Damon stared at the drive.

For years, his reputation had been built on controlling information.

Now one tiny object could destroy multiple powerful careers—including parts of his own father's legacy.

"If we release this," Adrian said, "Blackwell businesses will be investigated too."

Damon nodded.

"You could lose everything."

Damon looked toward Kate.

She understood what he was thinking.

Her words in the storage room.

If I tell you, I'll lose everything.

Damon picked up the drive.

"Then I lose it."

Adrian stared.

"Just like that?"

"No."

Damon stood.

"But if keeping what I have requires burying what happened to those women, then it was never worth keeping."

Kate felt something inside her shift.

For eleven months, Damon had been her employer.

For two weeks, he'd been her protector.

In that moment, he became simply a man she understood.

They turned the evidence over to attorneys and investigators.

Not newspapers.

Not rivals.

Investigators.

Damon gave a statement.

Adrian gave one.

Rachel gave one.

Kate gave another.

Then came the hardest part.

Waiting.

Preston was eventually charged in connection with the incident involving Kate, while investigators continued examining additional allegations and the alleged cover-up network. His attorneys denied broader accusations and said they would contest the government's claims.

Senator Caldwell announced he would cooperate with investigators while denying that he had knowingly concealed misconduct.

Damon refused every interview.

Kate returned to work six weeks later.

Her cast was gone.

Her arm remained weak, but it was healing.

One afternoon, she found Damon standing alone in the ballroom.

The same ballroom where the party had happened.

"You're brooding," she said.

"I don't brood."

"You absolutely brood."

He almost smiled.

Kate approached.

"Any word from Elena?"

"No."

"She'll come."

"You don't know that."

"No."

Kate stood beside him.

"But I think she wants to."

Damon looked at her.

"Why?"

"Because she wrote."

Before he could answer, the front doorbell rang.

A maid entered moments later.

"Mr. Blackwell?"

"Yes?"

"There's a woman asking for you."

Damon froze.

"Name?"

The maid looked confused.

"She wouldn't give one."

Kate's heart began pounding.

Damon walked toward the foyer.

Kate followed several steps behind.

A woman stood beside the front doors.

Early thirties.

Dark hair.

Simple coat.

Damon stopped halfway across the marble floor.

The woman stared at him.

Neither moved.

Then she smiled through tears.

"You're grayer."

Damon's breath broke.

"Elena?"

She nodded.

For perhaps the first time in his adult life, Damon Blackwell ran.

He crossed the foyer and wrapped his sister in his arms.

Elena began crying.

So did he.

Kate turned away to give them privacy.

Then Elena said something.

"Damon."

He pulled back.

"What?"

"I didn't come alone."

A little boy stepped from behind the doorway.

Eight years old.

Dark hair.

Gray eyes.

Damon stared.

Elena placed a hand on the child's shoulder.

"This is Noah."

Damon looked between them.

His face changed.

Elena whispered:

"He's your nephew."

But the biggest secret was still coming.

Because when Damon asked who Noah's father was, Elena's answer made Kate's blood run cold.

May you like

"Preston Caldwell."
