Chapter 6 - The Child Between Two Families

Damon didn't speak.

Noah stood beside Elena, holding a small backpack.

The boy had no idea why the adults were staring at him.

Kate moved first.

She crouched.

"Hi, Noah."

He looked at her.

"I'm Kate."

"I'm Noah."

"I like your backpack."

He glanced down at the faded astronaut stitched across it.

"It's space."

"I noticed."

That was enough.

Noah smiled.

Kate led him toward the kitchen with the promise of hot chocolate.

It gave Damon and Elena privacy.

For the next hour, Elena told her brother everything.

Her relationship with Preston had begun before she understood what kind of man he was.

He could be charming.

Apologetic.

Generous.

Then controlling.

When Elena tried to leave, he became frightening.

The night she disappeared, she had already learned she was pregnant.

She told no one except Victor.

"I thought if you knew," Elena said, "you'd kill him."

Damon looked away.

"At the time, I might have tried."

"That's why I ran."

"And Noah?"

"He doesn't know the details."

"Does Preston know about him?"

"No."

Damon's eyes snapped toward her.

"Keep it that way."

Elena shook her head.

"No more secrets."

Damon frowned.

"Noah deserves the truth someday."

"Not if the truth puts him in danger."

"Damon."

He stopped.

Elena touched his hand.

"This is what Dad did to us."

The words hurt.

"He decided what truths we could survive."

Damon looked toward the kitchen where Noah was laughing at something Kate had said.

Elena continued.

"We don't repeat that."

Damon nodded slowly.

"No more secrets."

Over the following weeks, Blackwell House changed.

Noah ran through hallways once designed for silence.

Elena opened curtains Damon had kept closed for years.

Kate discovered that Damon could cook exactly one meal—pancakes—and that he was absurdly proud of them.

One Sunday morning, she entered the kitchen to find flour on his black shirt.

She laughed.

Damon looked offended.

"Something funny?"

"You."

"Leave."

"No."

Elena watched from the doorway with a knowing smile.

Later, when Kate carried dishes to the sink, Elena joined her.

"He likes you."

Kate nearly dropped a plate.

"He's my employer."

"That's not what I said."

Kate's face warmed.

"Your brother is complicated."

"That's the polite version."

Kate laughed.

Then Elena became serious.

"He hasn't let anyone close since I disappeared."

Kate looked toward Damon.

Noah was showing him a drawing.

Damon listened as if the boy were explaining nuclear physics.

"I don't know what he wants from me."

Elena smiled.

"Maybe neither does he."

The legal case continued.

Kate avoided the news.

She wanted her life back.

She wanted to stop being "the maid with the broken arm."

She wanted to be Kate.

Damon seemed to understand.

He never discussed Preston unless she brought it up.

He never asked for gratitude.

And he never treated her like she was fragile.

One evening, Kate found him on the terrace.

"You paid my mother's hospital bills."

"Yes."

"I told you not to."

"You told me you couldn't owe me."

"Same thing."

"No."

She crossed her arms.

"I want to repay you."

Damon looked amused.

"Seventy-one thousand dollars?"

"Eventually."

"At your current salary, I'll be approximately ninety when that happens."

"Then stay healthy."

He laughed.

Kate stopped.

She had never heard him laugh like that.

Neither had Damon, apparently.

The moment changed.

Their eyes met.

He stepped closer.

Then stopped.

Always stopped.

Always gave her the choice.

"Kate."

"Yes?"

"I need to tell you something."

Her heart accelerated.

But before he could continue, Adrian appeared.

"Damon."

Something in his voice erased the moment.

"What?"

"We have a problem."

Preston's attorneys had learned about Noah.

Damon's face went cold.

"How?"

"We don't know."

Elena entered behind them.

Her expression collapsed.

"No."

Adrian continued.

"They haven't released anything publicly."

"Yet," Damon said.

Kate understood immediately.

A child was about to become leverage.

Damon turned toward Adrian.

"Find the leak."

Elena grabbed his arm.

"No."

He looked at her.

"No more wars."

"This isn't a war."

"It becomes one when you make decisions angry."

Damon looked at Noah through the glass doors.

Then he did something the old Damon Blackwell never would have done.

He sat down.

He thought.

And he called his lawyer.

The next day, Elena voluntarily met with investigators and established protections around Noah's privacy.

No threats.

No disappearances.

No retaliation.

Lawyers.

Courts.

Evidence.

It wasn't dramatic.

It was better.

That night, Damon stood outside Kate's apartment.

"I didn't finish what I was saying yesterday."

Kate smiled.

"No, you didn't."

He looked strangely nervous.

Damon Blackwell.

Nervous.

"I don't know how to do this."

"Do what?"

"Ask for something without already knowing the answer."

Kate's smile faded into something softer.

"Try."

He took a breath.

"When this started, I thought protecting you meant controlling everything around you."

"And now?"

"Now I think it means making sure you never have to be afraid to choose."

Kate's eyes filled.

Damon continued.

"I care about you."

She stepped closer.

"That's your big confession?"

"I'm new at this."

She laughed softly.

Then she kissed him.

It was brief.

Gentle.

When she pulled back, Damon looked stunned.

"There's your answer."

For one perfect second, everything was quiet.

Then Kate's phone rang.

Her mother.

Kate answered smiling.

"Mom?"

Silence.

Her smile disappeared.

"Mom?"

A hospital employee spoke from the other end.

Kate's knees weakened.

Damon caught her.

"What happened?"

Kate looked at him, terrified.

"My mother collapsed."

May you like

And suddenly, after everything they had survived, Kate was facing the one battle Damon Blackwell couldn't fight for her.
