Chapter 3 - The Secret Beneath Pier 19

Elias Russo had spent twenty-one years refusing to say his brother’s name unless absolutely necessary.

Antonio Russo had been nineteen when he disappeared.

Smart.

Reckless.

Convinced he was untouchable because his surname carried weight along the waterfront.

Elias had been seventeen.

Too young to stop him.

Old enough to remember every detail.

The unanswered phone calls.

Their mother sitting awake beside the kitchen window.

Their father turning anger into business.

And one police report that vanished less than forty-eight hours after it was filed.

Now Michael Dawson’s note had tied Antonio’s disappearance to Pier 19.

And to Khloe.

Not directly.

But enough.

The private room they borrowed near Grand Central was small, windowless, and lit by a single fluorescent panel.

The flash drive rested between them.

Khloe folded her arms.

“What happened to Antonio?”

Elias looked at the drive.

“He was doing work for my father.”

“What kind?”

“Deliveries.”

“Legal?”

“No.”

Khloe nodded slowly.

“At least you answer quickly.”

“I’ve learned lying wastes time.”

“Interesting philosophy for a criminal.”

Elias looked at her.

“I didn’t say I never lie.”

Despite everything, Khloe almost smiled.

Almost.

“What was Antonio delivering?”

“Cash. Documents. Sometimes nothing more than a message.”

“And he disappeared?”

“After a meeting at Pier 19.”

“With my father?”

“I don’t know.”

“But Dad was there.”

“According to this note.”

Khloe looked at the old photograph of Michael Dawson in uniform.

Her father appeared younger than she remembered him.

Hopeful.

Clean-shaven.

Standing beside a patrol car.

“You thought my father killed him?”

“No.”

“But your family did.”

Elias did not answer.

“That means yes.”

“My father believed the police were involved.”

“Was he right?”

“I don’t know yet.”

Khloe stared at the flash drive.

“Then let’s find out.”

Dominic brought in a laptop disconnected from the internet.

Elias inserted the drive.

A folder appeared.

M.D. ARCHIVE.

Inside were dozens of documents.

Scanned reports.

Bank records.

Photographs.

Old disciplinary files.

Shipping manifests.

Khloe felt sick.

Her father had spent years collecting evidence.

One folder was labeled GALLAGHER.

Another RUSSO.

A third PIER 19.

Elias clicked the last.

The first document was a twenty-one-year-old police incident report.

Antonio Russo.

Missing person.

Last seen near Pier 19.

Reporting witness: Officer Michael Dawson.

Khloe leaned closer.

Her father had signed it.

Below his signature appeared the name of another officer.

Sergeant Thomas Gallagher.

Brendan’s uncle.

Elias’s face hardened.

They opened the next file.

A scanned handwritten statement.

Michael Dawson’s.

Khloe read aloud.

“Observed Sergeant Gallagher meet unidentified male beside warehouse entrance. Male later identified through photograph as Antonio Russo.”

Elias stopped breathing.

Khloe continued.

“Argument witnessed. Russo appeared distressed.”

Then the next line.

“Sergeant Gallagher ordered reporting officer to leave scene.”

Khloe looked at Elias.

“Your brother met Gallagher.”

“Reporting officer returned twenty minutes later after hearing a disturbance. Warehouse empty. Blood—”

Khloe stopped.

Elias’s eyes lifted.

“Read it.”

She swallowed.

“Possible blood residue observed near loading bay.”

The word hung between them.

No certainty.

No body.

No proof.

Only a clue buried for two decades.

The next scanned document was marked INTERNAL AFFAIRS – REJECTED.

Michael had accused Sergeant Gallagher of evidence destruction.

Three weeks later, Michael resigned.

Khloe sat back.

“My father left the police because of this.”

Elias said nothing.

Dominic opened another document.

A financial record.

Payments from a construction company called Mercer Coastal Holdings.

Recipients included Thomas Gallagher.

Several city inspectors.

A deputy commissioner.

And one Russo company.

Elias stared at the screen.

“That isn’t ours.”

Dominic frowned.

“It uses one of our old addresses.”

“Forgery?”

“Maybe.”

Khloe pointed at another payment.

“What’s Sable Maritime?”

Elias’s face changed.

“A shell company.”

“Yours?”

“No.”

“Whose?”

“I thought it belonged to Viktor Malkin.”

Dominic shook his head.

“We never proved it.”

They opened the ownership documents.

Sable Maritime had changed registered agents four times.

But one old filing remained.

Emergency contact:

Thomas Gallagher.

Khloe looked at Elias.

“So Brendan inherited the business.”

“Maybe more than the business.”

A phone rang.

Dominic answered.

He listened.

Then frowned.

“What?”

Elias stood.

Dominic looked at Khloe.

“Maya’s phone just pinged.”

“Where?”

“Brooklyn.”

“Where in Brooklyn?”

Dominic hesitated.

“Pier 19.”

Khloe was already moving.

Elias blocked the door.

“No.”

“Move.”

“It could be bait.”

“I don’t care.”

“I do.”

Khloe stared at him.

He seemed almost surprised by his own words.

Then his expression reset.

“Gallagher wants you emotional.”

“My sister is there!”

“Which means he expects you to run straight into whatever he prepared.”

“Then what do you suggest?”

“We make him think you are.”

Khloe hated the idea.

She hated Elias’s calm.

Hated his control.

Hated that he was right.

Twenty minutes later, a sedan registered in Khloe’s name drove toward Pier 19.

Khloe was not inside.

Dominic’s driver wore her coat.

Meanwhile, Khloe and Elias approached from the river in an unmarked utility van.

Rain hammered the windshield.

Pier 19 looked abandoned.

Three warehouses.

Two rusted cranes.

Stacks of containers.

Dominic’s voice came through Elias’s earpiece.

“Target vehicle entering.”

A black SUV pulled onto the pier.

Gallagher.

Khloe saw him step out.

Even from a distance, she recognized the broad shoulders, close-cropped hair, and deliberate confidence.

Two men followed.

No Maya.

Gallagher approached Khloe’s decoy vehicle.

The driver stepped out.

Gallagher stopped.

Realized.

“Now,” Elias said.

Lights flooded the pier from both sides.

Dominic’s men appeared.

Gallagher spun.

For one second, Khloe expected violence.

Instead, Brendan laughed.

He actually laughed.

Then raised his empty hands.

“Elias.”

Russo stepped from the van.

Khloe remained behind the door.

Gallagher smiled.

“I wondered when you’d get curious.”

“Where’s the girl?”

“What girl?”

Elias moved closer.

“Don’t waste time.”

Gallagher shrugged.

“Maya Dawson? Safe.”

Khloe nearly stepped out.

Elias lifted one hand slightly.

Stay.

Gallagher noticed.

His smile widened.

“She’s here, isn’t she?”

Elias said nothing.

Gallagher laughed again.

“Khloe!”

His voice echoed between the warehouses.

“I know you’re listening.”

Khloe’s skin crawled.

Gallagher continued.

“You always were terrible at following instructions.”

Elias took another step.

“Where is she?”

Gallagher’s smile faded.

“You want the girl?”

“Yes.”

“I want the drive.”

Khloe froze.

He knew.

Gallagher looked directly toward the utility van.

“Your father should’ve burned it, Khloe.”

Her breath caught.

“He could’ve saved himself.”

Khloe stepped out before Elias could stop her.

“You killed him.”

Gallagher turned.

There she was.

Exactly who he wanted.

“Khloe.”

“You killed my father.”

Gallagher tilted his head.

“Heart disease killed your father.”

“You were at the hospital before we called you.”

His smile disappeared.

Khloe’s voice shook.

“You knew.”

Gallagher looked at Elias.

“You should tell her to be careful.”

Elias said nothing.

Gallagher reached slowly into his coat.

Dominic’s men tensed.

Gallagher pulled out a phone.

He tapped the screen.

A video appeared.

Maya sat in a chair.

Alive.

Frightened.

A digital clock behind her showed the current time.

Khloe moved forward.

“Maya!”

“She can’t hear you.”

“Where is she?”

Gallagher lowered the phone.

“The drive.”

Elias looked at Khloe.

She knew what he was asking.

Do we give it up?

Khloe’s mind raced.

Her father had risked everything to preserve the evidence.

Liam was in jail because of it.

But Maya was alive.

Nothing mattered more.

“Give it to him.”

Elias didn’t hesitate.

Dominic handed over a copy.

Gallagher frowned.

“Original.”

Elias smiled slightly.

“You didn’t think I brought the only copy?”

Gallagher’s jaw tightened.

“Then we have a problem.”

“No,” Elias said. “You do.”

Gallagher looked at him.

“The drive contains decades of records. Police corruption. Financial crimes. Your uncle.”

“And your father,” Gallagher said.

Elias went still.

Khloe turned.

“What?”

Gallagher smiled.

“Didn’t find that folder yet?”

Elias’s expression darkened.

“What folder?”

“Russo Senior.”

Khloe looked at Dominic.

They hadn’t opened every file.

Gallagher continued.

“Ask Elias what his father paid Thomas Gallagher to do to Antonio.”

Silence.

Elias’s face hardened.

“You’re lying.”

“Am I?”

Gallagher lifted the phone.

“Your father didn’t want Antonio talking.”

Khloe stared at Elias.

Gallagher’s voice softened.

“He paid my uncle to make his own son disappear.”

Elias’s face lost color.

For the first time, Khloe saw something crack inside him.

Gallagher stepped backward toward the SUV.

“Bring me the original drive tomorrow at midnight.”

“Where?”

“The old courthouse on Atlantic.”

“And Maya?”

“You get her when I get the drive.”

Gallagher entered the SUV.

Elias could have stopped him.

Dominic’s men could have surrounded the vehicle.

But if Maya’s location was unknown, no one moved.

The SUV disappeared into the rain.

Khloe turned toward Elias.

He stood staring at the empty road.

“Was he telling the truth?”

“I don’t know.”

“About your father.”

“I don’t know.”

“But you think he might have been.”

Elias looked at her.

And for once, there was no armor in his expression.

“Yes.”

Back at the safe house, Dominic reopened the flash drive.

They found the folder.

RUSSO, VITTORIO.

Inside was one scanned bank transfer.

Twenty-one years old.

Fifty thousand dollars.

From a Russo-controlled account.

To Thomas Gallagher.

Memo:

PIER 19 RESOLUTION.

Khloe looked at Elias.

He stared at the screen.

Then Dominic opened the final file.

A voice recording.

Michael Dawson.

Her father’s voice filled the room.

“If Elias Russo ever hears this, he deserves the truth.”

Elias closed his eyes.

Michael continued.

“Antonio was not killed at Pier 19.”

Everyone froze.

“He survived.”

Khloe looked at Elias.

Michael’s recording crackled.

May you like

“And as of the day I’m making this recording, Antonio Russo is still alive.”
