Chapter 5 - The Grave With No Body

Antonio Russo had a grave.
That was the part Elias had forgotten.
Not literally.
He knew his family had placed a stone in Saint Michael’s Cemetery after the police declared Antonio presumed dead.
But Elias had not visited in years.
His mother used to go every Sunday.
His father never went.
Now the empty grave had become the hiding place for a ledger that might destroy half a corruption network.
They arrived just after sunset.
Khloe.
Elias.
Dominic.
Antonio.
Maya stayed in a protected apartment with two women from Dominic’s security staff.
Khloe hated leaving her.
But Maya insisted.
“Finish it,” she said.
The cemetery was wet from the night before.
Antonio stood several feet from his own headstone.
His name carved into granite.
ANTONIO RUSSO.
BELOVED SON AND BROTHER.
1979–1998.
He stared at it for a long time.
“That’s strange.”
Elias looked at him.
“What?”
“Seeing the year everyone decided you died.”
No one had an answer.
Dominic had brought two men with digging equipment.
They worked quietly.
Three feet down, the shovel struck metal.
A waterproof case emerged.
Elias opened it.
Inside sat a thick leather ledger.
And an envelope.
TO ELIAS RUSSO.
His hands stopped.
Antonio watched.
“Open it.”
Elias did.
Michael Dawson’s handwriting again.
Elias,
Your father made terrible choices. So did mine. So did I.
But the worst lie powerful men tell themselves is that protecting family excuses destroying someone else’s.
Antonio survived because he chose to walk away from what your father built.
You may one day have to make the same choice.
The ledger proves Brendan Gallagher and Viktor Malkin continued the trafficking routes long after your father cut ties with them.
It also proves your father paid Thomas Gallagher to frighten Antonio into silence.
I found no evidence Vittorio ordered Antonio’s death.
Believe what you want about him.
But believe the records more.
Khloe watched Elias finish reading.
“What does it mean?”
Elias handed her the letter.
Antonio looked down.
“Our father tried to scare me away.”
“Still unforgivable,” Elias said.
“Yes.”
“But not murder.”
“No.”
Dominic opened the ledger.
Pages of handwritten transactions.
Names.
Dates.
Amounts.
Shipping codes.
Police badge numbers.
Politicians.
Shell companies.
Viktor Malkin appeared dozens of times.
Thomas Gallagher.
Then Brendan.
Khloe turned pages quickly.
“Liam.”
She found his name.
LIAM DAWSON — LEVERAGE.
Her chest tightened.
Below it:
K. DAWSON — COLLECTIONS.
M. DAWSON — SECONDARY LEVERAGE.
Khloe’s hands shook.
Gallagher had cataloged her family.
Like inventory.
Dominic pointed at another page.
“Twelve people scheduled for movement tomorrow.”
Khloe went pale.
“Tomorrow?”
“Yes.”
“Where?”
Dominic read the code.
“Route 6B.”
Antonio leaned closer.
“I know that code.”
Everyone turned.
“Port Newark.”
Elias looked at Dominic.
“Container ship?”
“Most likely.”
Antonio scanned the page.
“Midnight departure.”
Elias checked his watch.
Less than five hours.
Khloe stared at the list of names.
Twelve people.
She thought of the girl Liam heard crying in the van.
Thought of Gallagher smiling in her kitchen.
Thought of Maya tied to a chair.
“We stop it.”
Elias looked at her.
“We will.”
“No.”
Khloe closed the ledger.
“We stop all of it.”
Elias studied her.
Then nodded.
Dominic made calls.
Not to Russo soldiers.
To federal contacts Antonio had quietly maintained through a victim advocacy attorney.
To an assistant U.S. attorney Michael Dawson had named in his files.
To Internal Affairs.
Elias could have handled Gallagher privately.
Khloe knew that.
But private justice would not free Liam.
Would not clear his record.
Would not protect the other people Gallagher had hurt.
Evidence would.
They made three copies of the ledger.
One went to the federal prosecutor.
One to an attorney.
One remained with Khloe.
At 10:15 PM, Gallagher called.
Elias put the phone on speaker.
“You have my drive?”
“Yes.”
“And the original?”
“Yes.”
“Atlantic courthouse. Midnight.”
“We’ll be there.”
Gallagher paused.
“You sound calm.”
“So do you.”
“I have reason to be.”
“Do you?”
A silence.
Then Gallagher laughed.
“Bring Khloe.”
The call ended.
Khloe looked at Elias.
“He knows.”
“Maybe.”
“He always knows.”
“Not this time.”
At 11:47, they approached the abandoned courthouse annex.
Khloe wore a wire.
Federal agents waited several blocks away.
Elias hated the plan.
“You stay behind me.”
“I can speak for myself.”
“That isn’t the point.”
“What is?”
“If something happens—”
She looked at him.
“What?”
His face tightened.
“Nothing happens to you.”
Khloe held his gaze.
Something passed between them.
Not romance.
Not yet.
Something more fragile.
Trust.
Inside the courthouse, Gallagher waited alone.
At least visibly.
He wore no uniform.
No badge.
Just a dark coat.
“Khloe.”
She stopped ten feet away.
“You look better.”
She felt Elias tense.
Gallagher smiled.
“I always liked that blouse.”
Khloe’s stomach turned.
Elias’s voice became dangerous.
“Careful.”
Gallagher looked at him.
“There he is.”
Khloe stepped forward.
“Why Liam?”
Gallagher shrugged.
“Wrong place.”
“Why my father?”
“Old business.”
“Why Maya?”
“Insurance.”
“And me?”
Gallagher’s smile returned.
“Money.”
Khloe felt rage burn through fear.
“You were going to sell me for ten thousand dollars.”
Gallagher tilted his head.
“Don’t sound offended. You should see what Viktor charges.”
That sentence was enough.
The wire caught it.
Khloe continued.
“Where is Viktor?”
Gallagher’s face shifted.
Not much.
Enough.
“Far away.”
Elias smiled.
“You don’t know.”
Gallagher’s eyes narrowed.
“You lost control of him.”
“Shut up.”
Elias stepped closer.
“The ship leaves without you.”
Gallagher stared.
Then realized.
“You found the ledger.”
Khloe said nothing.
Gallagher moved.
Fast.
His hand reached inside his coat.
Elias pushed Khloe aside.
Agents flooded the corridor.
“Police! Hands!”
Gallagher froze.
His expression went blank.
Then he laughed.
“You think this ends with me?”
Agents cuffed him.
Khloe stood shaking.
Gallagher looked at her.
“Maya still won’t be safe.”
Khloe’s face hardened.
“You’re done.”
“No.”
He leaned closer as agents pulled him away.
“You have no idea who protects Malkin.”
An hour later, the federal raid began at Port Newark.
Containers were opened.
People were rescued.
Documents seized.
Vehicles stopped.
But Viktor Malkin was not there.
Instead, agents found one envelope inside the office.
Addressed to Elias Russo.
Inside was a photograph.
Taken that evening.
Khloe standing beside Antonio’s grave.
Someone had been watching them.
On the back:
YOU TOOK TWELVE FROM ME.
I ONLY NEED ONE FROM YOU.
Elias turned the photograph over.
A second line had been written beneath.
THE GIRL IN THE WHITE BLOUSE.
Khloe stared at it.
Elias’s expression became stone.
Viktor was not running.
He had chosen a new target.
May you like
Her.
