THE OLD KEY AT CALLOWAY HOUSE / Chapter 10 / 19

Chapter 10 - Ethan’s Confession

Ethan confessed three days later.

Not to the police.

To Lily.

The conversation took place in my office with attorneys present.

“I knew who you were,” he said.

Lily didn't react.

“From the beginning?”

“Yes.”

“How?”

“My father showed me your picture.”

Ethan described the plan.

Meet Lily.

Gain her trust.

Learn about Margaret's estate.

Eventually persuade her to claim greater control over the trust.

But something happened Charles hadn't planned.

Ethan fell in love.

“I tried to walk away,” he said.

“You married me.”

“I know.”

“You lied at our wedding.”

“I know.”

“You let me believe your father was dead.”

“I know.”

Lily's voice cracked.

“And then you humiliated my father.”

Ethan looked at me.

“That part was mine.”

“Why?” I asked.

“Because I hated you.”

“Why?”

“Because every year I spent with Lily made me understand what my father was doing.”

He swallowed.

“And every year made me more afraid she'd discover how we met.”

“So you blamed me?”

“Yes.”

It was ugly.

But believable.

Ethan had spent years trapped between love, greed, fear, and resentment.

Eventually he convinced himself that controlling the Calloway assets could solve everything.

If he became powerful enough, perhaps the original lie wouldn't matter.

Lily listened without interrupting.

When he finished, Ethan said:

“I do love you.”

She nodded.

“I believe you.”

Hope flashed across his face.

Then she continued.

“But love doesn't erase what you did.”

His hope disappeared.

“You publicly humiliated my father because you needed him to look unstable. You stole private documents. You tried to manipulate my trust.”

“I know.”

“And when he gave you that key, you laughed.”

Ethan looked down.

Lily stood.

“I loved you too.”

“Loved?”

She didn't answer directly.

Instead she placed the wedding ring on the table.

“You taught me something.”

“What?”

“That someone can love you and still be dangerous to your life.”

She walked away.

Ethan didn't stop her.

Neither did I.

But as he reached the door, he turned toward me.

“Frank.”

I waited.

“Why did you give me the key?”

“Because I wanted to see what you'd do once you realized what it opened.”

His face tightened.

“And?”

“You answered the question.”

He left.

For the first time, he looked less like an arrogant executive than a frightened boy carrying his father's sins.

But our problems were not finished.

Because the next morning, Harrington Capital called.

Ethan's forged financing request had triggered an internal audit.

And investigators had discovered something enormous.

Someone had been stealing from Calloway tenants for eleven years.

The name attached to the accounts wasn't Ethan's.

May you like

It was someone I trusted completely.
