Chapter 9 - Margaret’s Last Secret

Charles wanted me frightened.

Instead, I found him sitting beneath a hanging industrial light with Margaret's letter on the table.

“You got old, Frank.”

“So did you.”

He smiled.

“You still pretend you're ordinary.”

“I am ordinary.”

“You own half a skyline.”

“And still need reading glasses.”

He laughed.

Then pushed Margaret's letter toward me.

“Read it.”

I didn't touch it.

“You read my wife's private letter?”

“Your wife knew what you didn't.”

“Which was?”

“Lily isn't biologically yours.”

My chest tightened.

But I stayed still.

Charles expected devastation.

Instead, I asked:

“Is that all?”

His smile faded.

“You don't care?”

“I care about why Margaret never told me.”

Charles pushed the letter closer.

I opened it.

Margaret's handwriting filled three pages.

She told me something she'd carried for decades.

Before we married, she had briefly reunited with a former boyfriend during a painful separation between us.

She became pregnant soon afterward.

She never knew with certainty which man was Lily's biological father.

She had intended to tell me.

Then Lily was born.

I held her.

And Margaret became afraid.

Not because I would leave Lily.

Because she knew I wouldn't.

Her final paragraph broke me.

Frank, biology may answer a question, but it cannot rewrite a life. You became her father before either of us understood what that word truly required.

I closed my eyes.

Charles watched.

“So?”

“So what?”

“Now you understand. Lily's claim can be challenged.”

“No.”

His expression changed.

“Margaret's trust names Lily individually. Biology is irrelevant.”

Charles froze.

Apparently, he had spent decades plotting around a legal theory that didn't exist.

I almost pitied him.

Almost.

Then Detective Hale stepped from behind the partition.

Charles stood.

Two officers entered behind him.

His face collapsed.

“You set me up.”

“No.”

I picked up Margaret's letter.

“You did that yourself.”

But before officers led him away, Charles smiled again.

“You think Ethan is the villain.”

I looked at him.

“He isn't?”

“My son started this for me.”

Charles's eyes shifted toward Lily, who had just entered with Rebecca.

“But somewhere along the way, Ethan actually fell in love with her.”

Lily stopped.

Charles continued.

“And that's why everything went wrong.”

That statement would haunt my daughter.

Because now she had to answer the hardest question of all:

What do you do when someone truly loves you—

May you like

after beginning your relationship with a lie?
