Chapter 12 - Ethan Gives Everything Back

Ethan arrived at Calloway House carrying a cardboard box.
No tuxedo.
No expensive watch.
No lawyer.
Inside were documents, passwords, backup drives, and every record Charles had given him.
“I want to cooperate.”
Detective Hale stared at him.
“Why now?”
Ethan looked toward Lily.
“Because I'm done becoming my father.”
His cooperation exposed the entire scheme.
Charles had spent decades nursing resentment against me.
He believed I destroyed his career.
In reality, I'd protected him from prosecution.
That mercy had become, in his mind, humiliation.
Ethan gave prosecutors enough evidence to dismantle the financing fraud.
He also resigned from Harrington Capital.
His career was effectively over.
Lily didn't take him back.
That mattered.
Forgiveness did not require reunion.
Months passed.
The criminal cases moved forward.
Daniel Langford pleaded guilty.
Charles faced multiple fraud charges.
Ethan received a reduced outcome because of his cooperation and because several documents had never progressed beyond attempted fraud.
Calloway House survived.
So did Lily.
She moved into a modest apartment she paid for herself.
One Sunday, she came to my house carrying groceries.
“What are these?”
“Dinner.”
“You cook?”
“No.”
“That's concerning.”
She laughed.
It was the first easy laugh I'd heard from her in months.
We burned the chicken.
Ordered pizza.
And ate at my old kitchen table.
No chandeliers.
No executives.
No security.
Just father and daughter.
Then Lily noticed my scratched watch.
“You still have that?”
“Of course.”
“Why?”
“Your mother gave it to me.”
She touched the worn steel.
“Dad?”
“Yes?”
“When did you know you were rich?”
I thought about it.
“Never.”
She laughed.
“Seriously.”
“I knew when I stopped worrying about whether the electricity would be shut off.”
“And after that?”
“Everything else was numbers.”
She became quiet.
Then asked:
“What am I supposed to do with Mom's trust?”
“Whatever kind of person you want to become.”
That answer would lead Lily somewhere neither of us expected.
Because instead of buying a penthouse—
she went downstairs to the maintenance department.
May you like
And asked for a job.
