Chapter 11 - The Night Boone Fell

Three months passed.
Then Boone frightened us.
Arthur woke at 2:14 one morning because Boone was breathing strangely.
We rushed him to an emergency veterinary hospital.
Age had caught up with him.
The veterinarian found a heart condition.
Treatable.
Manageable.
But serious.
Arthur sat on the floor beside Boone’s examination table.
“I thought he was supposed to take care of me.”
The veterinarian smiled gently.
“Maybe it’s your turn.”
Arthur barely slept for a week.
He monitored medications.
Changed Boone’s walks.
Learned every symptom.
Something remarkable happened.
The man who once feared leaving home now drove Boone to appointments himself.
The roles had reversed.
Boone needed Arthur.
And Arthur rose to meet it.
Then Lily called.
Samuel was declining.
He wanted to see Boone one more time.

Arthur didn’t hesitate.
“We’re going.”
