Chapter 17 - Forty-Five Years

Our forty-fifth anniversary arrived.

Arthur booked the restaurant himself.

Same restaurant.

Same table.

Same navy jacket.

Same gold earrings.

Boone came too.

His pace was slower.

His muzzle almost completely white.

But he walked beside Arthur.

Paul greeted us.

Rachel had been promoted.

George and Nancy secretly sent champagne.

When dessert arrived, Arthur looked toward the table where Diane had once sat.

Empty.

He smiled.

“What?”

I asked.

“Nothing.”

“That’s never true.”

He reached across the table.

“Last year I nearly walked out.”

“I remember.”

“This year I walked in without thinking about it.”

I squeezed his hand.

“That’s progress.”

“No.”

May you like

He looked under the table.

“That’s Boone.”
