Chapter 13 - The Cane on the Floor

Six months after our anniversary, Arthur attended another recovery dinner.

Halfway across the restaurant, his balance suddenly disappeared.

His cane fell.

The room tilted.

Boone moved instantly.

He braced against Arthur’s leg.

Arthur steadied himself.

For several seconds, everyone watched.

The old Arthur would have fled.

This Arthur picked up his cane.

“Sorry, Boone.”

Then he continued walking.

George applauded once.

Arthur pointed at him.

“Don’t start.”

Everyone laughed.

And that laughter mattered.

It wasn’t pity.

It was belonging.

Later, Arthur told me:

“I spent two years trying to look normal.”

“What changed?”

May you like

He looked at Boone.

“I stopped thinking normal was the goal.”
