Chapter 13 - The Offer Maya Refused

Three months later, Maya received the largest offer of her career.
A multinational conglomerate offered $2.4 billion for NorthStar.
Rachel nearly dropped the document.
“You could walk away.”
Maya stared at the number.
Two point four billion.
Ten years earlier she had worried about rent.
Now strangers were offering enough money to change generations.
Robert surprised her.
“Don’t ask me.”
Maya smiled.
“I wasn’t going to.”
“Good.”
“What would you do?”
Robert laughed.
“That sounds suspiciously like asking.”
“I’m curious.”
He thought.
“Ten years ago I would have told you to take it.”
“And now?”
“Now I’d ask what you want.”
Maya smiled.
Progress.
Maya rejected the offer.
Not because the number was too small.
Because NorthStar was not finished.
The decision became business news.
Some analysts called it courageous.
Others called it reckless.
Maya welcomed both opinions.
For the first time in her life, disagreement did not feel like rejection.
But then the board challenged her.
Three directors wanted the sale.
Employees worried.
Investors demanded answers.
Maya stood before hundreds of people.
“I cannot promise that refusing this offer will prove correct.”
The room became silent.
“I can promise that I will never confuse confidence with certainty.”
That sentence spread online.
Not because it was dramatic.
May you like
Because it was true.
And Maya was about to discover how expensive uncertainty could become.
