Chapter 14 - The Worst Quarter

NorthStar’s next quarter was terrible.

Two major clients left.

A product launch failed.

Revenue missed projections.

The media remembered Maya’s rejected offer immediately.

HEADSTRONG BILLIONAIRE’S $2.4 BILLION MISTAKE?

Robert saw the headline.

He said nothing.

Maya noticed.

“You can say it.”

“Say what?”

“I told you so.”

Robert shook his head.

“I don’t know enough to say that.”

Maya laughed.

“Who are you?”

“Apparently I’m learning.”

At NorthStar, Maya made painful cuts.

Executive bonuses disappeared.

Expansion paused.

But she refused mass layoffs.

Instead, leadership salaries were reduced first.

Maya took no salary at all.

Employees noticed.

Six months later, the company recovered.

A new platform succeeded.

Three clients returned.

NorthStar’s valuation rose beyond the rejected offer.

Reporters called Maya brilliant.

She disliked that headline too.

Because she knew the truth.

A good outcome did not magically make every risky decision wise.

Sometimes you could make a reasonable choice and lose.

Sometimes a reckless choice won.

Leadership was living with that uncertainty.

At Thanksgiving, Robert raised his glass.

“To Maya.”

She immediately pointed at him.

“Careful.”

Everyone laughed.

Robert smiled.

“Not because she was right.”

Maya relaxed.

“Because she had the courage to accept that she might be wrong.”

May you like

Maya’s eyes unexpectedly filled.

That was the father she had wanted for ten years.
