Chapter 16 - Emily’s Choice

Emily’s transformation came differently.
She was offered a prestigious hospital executive role.
Higher salary.
More authority.
Everything the old Richardson family would have celebrated.
She turned it down.
Susan nearly dropped her fork when Emily announced it.
Robert simply asked, “Why?”
Emily smiled.
“The job would mean I barely see Sophie.”
Susan started to speak.
Then stopped herself.
Maya noticed.
Emily chose a smaller nonprofit hospital.
Less prestige.
More meaningful work.
At Christmas, the family gathered again.
Same room.
Same fireplace.
Same television.
But nobody arranged the chairs like a tribunal.
Maya arrived late.
Robert opened the door.
“Successful businesswoman finally decides to visit ordinary people?”
Maya raised an eyebrow.
Robert panicked.
Then she laughed.
“I’m kidding, Dad.”
He exhaled.
“You’re terrible.”
Inside, Sophie had created a handwritten sign:
NO FAMILY MEETINGS WITHOUT LEGAL REPRESENTATION.
Maya laughed so hard she had to sit down.
Even Susan laughed.
The old wound had finally become something they could touch without bleeding.
Then the television displayed Maya’s face again.
Everyone froze.
Maya stared.
Robert grabbed the remote.
“Nope.”

He turned it off.
The entire family burst out laughing.
