Chapter 12 - Vanessa's Champagne Glass

At thirty, Lily hosted the foundation's annual dinner in Grandma's old mansion.
The dining room looked almost unchanged.
Same chandelier.
Same marble.
Same mountain view.
But the atmosphere was different.
Teachers sat beside executives.
Scholarship recipients beside board members.
Employees beside investors.
Nobody cared what anyone's dress cost.
Vanessa stood near the window holding champagne.
She looked toward the spot where she had humiliated Lily twenty-four years earlier.
“I think about that night sometimes,” she told me.
“So do I.”
“I wish I could erase it.”
“You can't.”
“I know.”
Across the room, Lily was talking with a group of children who had lost parents.
She crouched so she could speak at their eye level.
Just as I had once crouched beside her.
Vanessa watched.
“She became incredible.”
“She always was.”
Vanessa nodded.
“I just couldn't see it.”
Then she looked at her champagne glass.
“You remember how close I came to dropping this?”
I laughed.
“Yes.”
“I thought Grandma had destroyed my life.”
“Did she?”
“No.”
Vanessa looked at Lily.
“She probably saved it.”
Before dinner ended, Lily took the microphone.
“I want to tell you about a dress.”
I froze.
Vanessa did too.
Lily told the guests about being six years old.
About wearing a simple navy-blue dress.
About adults laughing.
But she didn't name anyone.
She didn't need revenge.
She had something better.
Perspective.
“When you're six,” Lily said, “you think adults know what things are worth.”
The room became silent.
“But adults get confused too. Sometimes they mistake price for value. Status for character. Wealth for success.”
She looked toward me.
“My father taught me differently.”
My eyes burned.
“And my great-grandmother made sure I never forgot.”
Applause filled the room.
Vanessa wiped her eyes.
Then Lily raised her glass.
“To Eleanor Carter.”
Everyone stood.
“To Eleanor.”
I looked at the chandelier.
For one impossible second, I could almost imagine Grandma sitting at the head of the table.
May you like
Smiling.
