Chapter 17 - The Empty Chair

On what would have been Grandma's hundredth birthday, we gathered at the mansion.
Not for mourning.
For dinner.
One chair remained empty at the head of the table.
Grandma's.
Lily placed a cup of tea beside it.
Vanessa laughed softly.
“She'd complain it's too weak.”
Dad replied, “She'd complain about everything.”
Mom smiled.
For once, the laughter wasn't aimed at anyone.
It included everyone.
Lily stood.
“I found something.”
She held Grandma's old notebook.
Inside was a sentence written years before the inheritance announcement.
Lily read it aloud:
“Leave wealth to the person least impressed by it.”
Nobody spoke for a moment.
Then Vanessa smiled.
“That sounds like her.”
Lily closed the notebook.
“She wasn't choosing a winner.”
I looked at her.
“She was choosing what she wanted the money to become.”
That distinction mattered.
Grandma hadn't given Lily wealth because Lily was superior.
She had created a responsibility because she believed Lily could grow into it.
The evening ended with stories.
Bad ones.
Funny ones.
Painful ones.
True ones.
Family wasn't magically repaired.
Some relationships remained distant.
Some wounds left scars.
But cruelty no longer controlled the room.
May you like
That mattered.
