Chapter 14 - My Father's Apology

Dad was seventy-two when he finally apologized to me.

Not the vague kind.

Not “I'm sorry you were offended.”

Not “mistakes were made.”

A real apology.

We were sitting on my porch.

“I failed you.”

I looked at him.

“I failed Sarah.”

Silence.

“And I failed Lily.”

I waited.

“I spent my life believing providing money was the same as providing love.”

He stared toward the yard.

“When you rejected the company, I thought you were rejecting me.”

“I wasn't.”

“I know that now.”

“Why did you laugh that night?”

He swallowed.

“Because Vanessa was behaving like me.”

That wasn't what I expected.

“I had spent years teaching her that people mattered according to what they achieved, earned, owned.”

He looked ashamed.

“When she mocked Lily, I recognized the rules I'd taught her.”

“Then why laugh?”

“Because admitting it was cruel meant admitting I was cruel.”

That answer hurt.

But it was true.

He looked at me.

“I don't expect forgiveness.”

For once, he wasn't asking for anything.

So I gave him something he hadn't requested.

“I forgive you.”

His eyes filled.

“But?”

He knew me.

“But forgiveness doesn't rewrite history.”

He nodded.

“No.”

“It just means history doesn't control tomorrow.”

Dad cried.

I let him.

Years earlier, I might have felt vindicated.

Instead, I felt tired.

May you like

And strangely free.
