Chapter 15 - Evelyn’s Second Call

Two years passed.
Then Evelyn called me.
I almost didn't answer.
“Claire?”
Her voice sounded older.
“What happened?”
“Daniel is being released next month.”
I knew.
His sentence had been affected by cooperation, restitution, and other legal factors.
Evelyn continued.
“He doesn't want to contact you.”
“Good.”
“He asked me to make sure you knew.”
“Why?”
“Because he thought hearing it from the news might frighten you.”
I sat quietly.
That was the first time Daniel had considered how his presence might affect me without using that effect to control me.
“I appreciate the information.”
Evelyn started to say goodbye.
Then stopped.
“Claire?”
“Yes?”
“I volunteer now.”
I waited.
“At a family-services center.”
That surprised me.
“I don't tell anyone who I am.”
“Why are you telling me?”
“Because you once said silence wasn't neutrality.”
She swallowed.
“I can't change what I did. But I can stop being silent when I see it happening somewhere else.”
I didn't tell her I was proud.
That wasn't my role.
But I said, “That's worth doing.”
After we hung up, I sat beside the window.
People wanted endings to be simple.
Villains punished.
Victims healed.
Justice delivered.
Real life wasn't shaped that neatly.
Daniel had done terrible things and was trying to become different.
Evelyn had enabled him and was trying to interrupt the same pattern elsewhere.
Neither transformation erased what happened.
But neither was meaningless.
Michael came home carrying groceries.
He found me staring outside.
“You okay?”
“Yeah.”
He kissed my forehead.
“What are you thinking about?”
“Endings.”
“And?”
I smiled.
“I don't think they're real.”
He raised an eyebrow.
“That sounds depressing.”
“No.”
I looked at him.
“I think there are just places where you decide what happens next.”
Three months later, Michael took me to the foundation garden.
He didn't kneel.
He didn't arrange photographers.
He didn't hide a ring in champagne.
He simply held my hands.
“Would marrying me make your life bigger or smaller?”
I laughed through tears.
“Bigger.”
“Good.”
He took a ring from his pocket.
“Then would you like to?”
I said yes.
But before our wedding, there was one place I needed to go.
May you like
And one person I needed to see.
