Chapter 5 - Why Daniel Married Me

The answer arrived inside an old email archive.

Margaret’s investigators recovered messages from a dormant Mercer Development server.

One was dated eight months before I met Daniel.

From Evelyn Mercer to Charles Mercer.

If Bennett’s daughter still controls Anne’s trust, Daniel needs to meet her before anyone else realizes what she’s sitting on.

I read the sentence three times.

Then another.

Richard Bennett has kept Claire sheltered from the financial side. That can work in our favor.

My hands went cold.

Daniel had known.

Evelyn had known.

Our “accidental” meeting at the charity dinner had been arranged.

Every romantic coincidence suddenly became evidence.

The restaurant reservation Daniel somehow got on Valentine’s Day.

The weekend in Napa.

The proposal after seven months.

Evelyn crying while helping me choose a wedding dress.

Six years of memories rearranged themselves into something ugly.

But among the emails was one Daniel sent his mother two weeks after meeting me.

Stop asking about the trust. I actually like her.

That sentence hurt differently.

Because perhaps some part had been real.

Perhaps Daniel had entered my life for money and then loved me.

Or thought he did.

But love that eventually became fear and control was not something I needed to rescue.

That afternoon, I filed for divorce.

Daniel was served before sunset.

He called seventeen times.

I answered the eighteenth.

“Claire.”

His voice sounded different.

Small.

“You're making a mistake.”

“No.”

“Vanessa lied to you.”

“She gave us the documents.”

Silence.

Then:

“My mother started this.”

There it was.

Not remorse.

Blame.

“She knew about your trust,” he said. “I didn't care after I met you.”

“You forged my signature.”

“I was trying to save the company.”

“You hurt me.”

Silence.

“Claire, I lost control.”

“You didn't lose control, Daniel. You used it.”

He began crying.

Six years earlier, that sound would have broken me.

That day, it didn't.

“I love you.”

I looked at the bruise reflected in the window.

“No. You loved having someone who kept forgiving you.”

I ended the call.

But Daniel’s problems were only beginning.

Because investigators had discovered something inside the financial records that nobody expected.

The missing $2.4 million wasn't the largest transfer.

It was only the newest.

Over five years, nearly $31 million had moved through twelve shell companies.

Daniel hadn't authorized most of them.

Evelyn had.

And one recipient appeared again and again.

C. Mercer Holdings.

Charles Mercer.

Daniel’s uncle.

The man who had known about my trust before Daniel ever met me.

When investigators went to question Charles, his office was empty.

His computer was gone.

His passport was missing.

And his private plane had departed three hours earlier.

Destination unknown.

But before leaving, Charles had sent one email.

To me.

The subject contained four words:

May you like

YOUR MOTHER KNEW EVERYTHING.
