Chapter 7 - The Video That Ended the Mercer Name

The video spread faster than anyone expected.
Not publicly.
Not yet.
But among lawyers, investigators, board members, and the people Daniel had spent years impressing.
The man who had built his reputation on charm was suddenly trapped by his own words.
Daniel requested to speak with me.
I refused.
He requested again through his attorney.
I refused again.
On the third request, Margaret said there might be strategic value in hearing him.
So we met in a conference room.
Not alone.
Never again alone.
Daniel entered wearing a plain gray suit.
For the first time since I had met him, he looked ordinary.
No mansion.
No luxury car.
No mother standing behind him.
Just Daniel.
He sat across from me.
“Claire.”
I said nothing.
“I didn't mean what I said in that video.”
“You said it.”
“My mother was pressuring me.”
“You were thirty-two.”
He lowered his eyes.
“I loved you.”
“Maybe.”
That surprised him.
I continued.
“Maybe you eventually did. But love isn't a magic word that erases what someone does.”
His eyes filled.
“I need help.”
“Then get help.”
“Come with me.”
“No.”
The word came easily.
Daniel stared at me as though he had never heard it before.
Then he leaned forward.
“My mother has documents.”
Margaret immediately focused.
“What documents?”
Daniel looked at me.
“She has records Charles gave her. If investigators find them, she’s finished.”
“Where?”
“I'll tell you if Claire agrees to ask prosecutors for leniency.”
Margaret closed her folder.
“We're done.”
Daniel panicked.
“Wait.”
I stood.
“Claire!”
I stopped at the door.
He looked desperate.
“The safe in my mother’s dressing room.”
That was the first useful thing Daniel gave us without receiving anything in return.
A lawful search later uncovered the records.
Evelyn was charged with financial crimes connected to Mercer Development.
Charles was arrested two days later at a private cabin owned through one of his shell companies.
The Mercer empire began collapsing.
But the company itself survived.
Six months later, an independent restructuring board took control.
Seven hundred ninety-three jobs were preserved.
Several failing projects were sold.
Others were completed.
I joined the board temporarily, then stepped away.
I didn't want Mercer Development.
I wanted my life.
But just as the criminal cases seemed to be settling into the slow machinery of the courts, Vanessa called.
Her baby had been born.
A boy.
Healthy.
She named him Ethan.
I visited her once.
She apologized again.
I told her she didn't owe me another apology.
Before I left, she handed me an envelope.
“Daniel asked me to give you this.”
Inside was a handwritten letter.
I almost threw it away.
Instead, I read one sentence.
Claire, there is one thing my mother still hasn't told anyone: the mansion was never ours.
I frowned.
Then I read the next line.
May you like
And suddenly I understood why Evelyn had fought so desperately to keep me inside that house.
