Chapter 3 - The Envelope Chelsea Never Expected

Albert let Logan inside.
His son looked around the modest apartment.
No luxury furniture.
No expensive decorations.
Just a desk, two chairs, books, and a photograph of Margaret.
“You really live here?”
“For now.”
Logan sat.
Albert remained standing.
“What’s in the envelope?”
Logan opened it.
Bank statements.
Credit-card summaries.
Invoices.
Albert recognized several immediately.
“What am I looking at?”
“I started checking everything.”
Logan rubbed his forehead.
“After the bank called, Chelsea blamed you. I did too.”
Albert said nothing.
“But then I wondered how we got this dependent on your guarantees.”
Logan pushed one page across the table.
“I found accounts I didn’t know existed.”
Albert studied them.
Chelsea had been spending aggressively.
Luxury purchases.
Expensive restaurants.
Trips.
Recurring charges.
Thousands disappearing monthly.
“Did you authorize these?”
“No.”
Another page.
“And this?”
Logan shook his head.
Albert leaned back.
“You need an accountant.”
“I thought you were an accountant.”
“I’m your father.”
That distinction landed heavily.
“I can look,” Albert said, “but you need an independent professional.”
Logan nodded.
Then his voice cracked.
“Did I ruin everything?”
Albert looked at his son.
There was no satisfying answer.
“You ignored things because confronting them was uncomfortable.”
Logan lowered his eyes.
“Especially what Chelsea did to me,” Albert added.
“I know.”
“No, Logan. You know now.”
That was different.
Logan cried quietly.
Albert wanted instinctively to comfort him.
Instead, he waited.
Sometimes love meant refusing to rescue someone from consequences they needed to understand.
“Dad…”
“Yes?”
“I’m sorry.”
Albert studied his face.
“For losing the money?”
Logan shook his head.
“For making you use the back door.”
Albert’s expression changed.
Logan continued.
“I knew. Every time. I knew what she was doing.”
The room became silent.
“I kept telling myself I was keeping the peace.”
Albert nodded slowly.
“Peace for whom?”
Logan had no answer.
Before leaving, Logan stopped beside the door.
“I don’t expect you to fix this.”
“Good.”
“But I want to fix us.”
Albert looked at him.
“That takes longer.”
“I know.”
Logan left.
That evening, Chelsea discovered where he had gone.
Albert knew because she called fifteen times.
He answered the sixteenth.
“What did you tell him?”
“Nothing he couldn’t discover himself.”
“You’re turning my husband against me.”
“Chelsea, your marriage is not my account to balance.”
She became quiet.
Then she said something Albert did not expect.
“You think you know everything.”
“No.”
“You don’t know why I wanted you gone.”
Albert’s fingers tightened around the phone.
“Then tell me.”
Another silence.
When Chelsea finally spoke, her voice had changed.
“You were getting too close to something.”
Albert stared at the financial papers Logan had left behind.
“What?”
Chelsea hung up.
Albert immediately called Fiona.
“Can you meet tomorrow?”
“What happened?”
Albert looked at the statements.
“I think this stopped being about disrespect.”
He paused.

“I think Chelsea was afraid I would discover something.”
