Chapter 15 - The Boy Who Walked Into Court

Toby wore a navy blazer.

He hated it.

He said the collar was trying to kill him.

I told him courtroom fashion was brutal.

We walked together.

His hand was in mine.

Cameras remained behind barriers.

Inside, Richard Beaumont turned when we entered.

His face changed when he saw Toby.

For the first time, Richard looked small.

Not physically.

Morally.

Power depends heavily on people believing you possess it.

Richard’s power had evaporated.

The prosecution presented the video.

I didn’t watch Toby during it.

I watched Richard.

He looked away.

Toby didn’t.

Isabelle testified for nearly four hours.

Jasper accepted a plea agreement and testified against his father.

Kyle followed.

Loyalty disappeared the moment prison became real.

Margaret Cole presented records.

Marcus explained the financial links.

Doctors testified about Toby’s injuries.

Then the defense tried to portray Richard as an elderly grandfather who had lost control during a family argument.

The prosecutor asked one question.

“If this was an accident, why did you pay Andrew Vale two days beforehand?”

Silence.

That silence ended Richard Beaumont.

The jury deliberated less than six hours.

Guilty.

Not on every charge.

But enough.

Richard stood motionless as the verdicts were read.

Toby squeezed my hand.

“Dad?”

“Yeah?”

“Can we go home now?”

I looked at him.

“Yes.”

And that was the moment I realized victory did not feel like revenge.

May you like

It felt like leaving.
